Poor Dash . . . It's bed time and that is a bad thing for him. The first 3 nights home with us were like a dream. He went to bed and slept through the night with only a minor whimper. The last 2 nights are a whole 'nother story. He cried, whimpered, and jumped up and down in his play yard for an hour night before last and THREE hours last night. I am trying the NILIF concept, but it is really hard to ignore him. I tried crating him next to my bed, but he goes berserk, though he will sleep in there during the day with the door open. I'm afraid he will hurt himself if I leave him in the crate. I am literally dreading going to bed tonight. Any suggestions?! |
Sorry I won't be any help -- I have always given up and let each new puppy sleep on me, curled up at my neck. Annie still likes to sleep there but I try to push her down a litrle so I don't suffocate in my sleep. :) I just have never been able to listen to them cry. All 3 of mine sleep with me. One on each side and Annie right on me. Sometimes I think they have a hard time sleeping if I am not here. I had some things to do in town today so they got no naps and they are tired now. Ben is trying to get me oiff the computer so he can go to bed. :) Guess I'd better go. I did want to give you some empathy though! I know how hard it is to hear those little whines and cries. Most say they will eventually give it up and sleep in their crates. I just never got that far. Good luck to you and Dash! |

I put Tibbe's carrier in the bed with me at first until I was certain he wouldn't wet on the bed or something but after about 2 wks., out of the carrier he came and started to sleep with me. |
Nicco sleeps with us and I'm sure that ultimately Dash will as well. But, I am worried for 2 reasons - 1 he is not fully house broken and I'm not sure that he won't pee on my bed and 2 I am scared he will walk off the edge of the very big bed. |

I know, I know it's tough, but knowing the origin of your little guy...He slept in a crate.....You are going to have to stay firm....A couple of nights of being firm....he'll get the message. I've had several grooming clients that have asked me to help them get their pups to sleep in their crate.....It takes a couple of nights....but, many of a husband has come back and thanked me profusely....telling me how happy they were to get their bed back, their wife back.... If you have him in a play yard...just wondering what you have the play yard on? Is there a protective surface to protect his knees? Do you have a top on it. Have you attempted walking him before bedtime? Have you contacted your breeder for assistance? |
Some times they just need to tuff it out. It is harder on mom than it is on baby. There were times with our children where my husband would stand infront of the nursery door and not let me go in. When our dogs were little I would go sit outside while they cried,ya in the middle of the night. Until they went to sleep. Hang in there! |
AWWW one of the joy's of puppyhood. I hope it all works out. |
With Chloe, I just popped her onto my bed and she has slept there ever since. When I got Willow I didn't want another in the bed with me. Too confining. So I crated her but...............she never made a sound but I had her crate across from my bed and I couldn't stand seeing that little face staring at me. After two nights, I put her up with us and she snuggled in like she had been there her whole life. |
Teegy never had any issues sleeping through the night. I put him in his carrier on my bedroom chair and turned the chair facing me so I was right there in his face. Did that for around a week then put the carrier on the floor beside my bed for the next couple of weeks. Week 3 brought in a bed on his blanket and he took to it right away. Now the little bugger sleeps on the pillow beside my head and ocassionally farts in my face in the middle of the night. |
I as others, just wanted to offer you sympathy. My suggestion would be to ignore it best you cn and stand firm. Like a newborn baby, it should get easier. I guess I got SUPER lucky with Bella as she slept in her dog house bed thingy I got her from day one! Not a whimper or a cry one, either! Now, she is in our bed, along with a 3 year old my husband and I. LOL thank goodness we have a King size matress!! I elected to let her sleep near me after I knew she was not going to potty in my bed. Might I add that she is quite the guard dog too in the middle of the night, one noise lately and she goes berserk growling (sounds more like purring :p) and barking! |
Well, it's that time again. He actually did well last night. I didn't let him nap after dinner and ran his little butt into the ground playing. He whined a bit when he went in his play yard, but fell asleep quickly - thank goodness! He spends a lot of time right next to me in his crate (with the door hanging open) while I am working during the day and it is my preference to have him sleep in there overnight, but I will ease him into it. His play yard is spacious, but not too big, with a nice comfy bed. It is a mesh, octagon shape and I got one 36" tall with a cover that zips around the top. He won't be able to hurt himself by jumping out or over. I have talked to his breeder and she gave the same advice as many of you - crate, next to my bed so he can see/smell me and be patient.:) I just hate how he throws himself around it there, scratching at the metal door. The vet suggested covering the crate opening with a towel or blanket and then closing the door so if he scratches he won't catch a nail. |

Love it!! :) Rosie is in bed with us too! |
I put a pillow in Pann's cage as to make it soft and he gets one toy, then I cover it with a blanket, without the blanket he freaks out so I recommend trying putting a blanket over his crate while he sleeps |
