Need a little advice... My boyfriend and I plan to get Buster neutered at the end of May. Buster has rear dew claws and I was wondering if we should get them removed at the same time? Or should we even get them removed at all? I know it's a bad thing to put him under any more than needed but would neutering and dew claws at the same time be too much for the poor little guy?? :confused: Plus getting any left over baby teeth pulled... I guess my questions are... Should we get them removed at all? ... If we do get them removed should we do it at the same time he is neutered? Also front dew claws are ok right? They don't need removed?? Sorry if I sound clueless but I kind of am... and a bit nervous... hate the idea of my little man getting any type of surgery :( |

The vet said it was OK... I'm just a worry wart... I guess the bigger question is if it is even really neccesary to have them remaoved at all... the vet really didn't give us a straight answer on that one... I guess it's more or less our choice... I was just wondering it anyone had any personal experience with this??? |
Dew Claws I think aren't a big deal on little Yorkies, with big dogs I have seen them catch on things, even to the point of tearing. Peanut has one dewclaw and it has never been a problem. I keep the nail short. I would talk to your vet and see what he says as well. |

I never got my Beagle's rear dewclaws removed and I regret it. She gets them caught on things frequently, no injuries thank goodness, but still I wish I would have had them removed when she was a baby. Might not be as big a deal for a little Yorkie, but if it was my dog, I'd do it. Recovery's not a big deal if it's done properly - done with a laser vs. a scalpal. Removal with a scalpal will definatly be harder because it will scab and possibly bleed and need bandages, but the laser cauterizes as it makes the insision and it makes a world of difference. So, ask your vet if they would be useing a laser to remove them. If so I'd do it during the neuter, it won't cause any more stress to your baby and it's better to have them under the anesthesia once instead of going back and having to put them under again. |
