Need help/advise I know this is in the wrong place but I am not getting any answers there and I need help right now. I am trying to train Marley to go on newspaper now and I know I can't expect her to get it right away. I know it can take months if not longer to get her trained. Right now I have her on newspaper and she's been on there for 2 freaking hours and still has not gone. It's like she HOLDS it until she gets off. It's really frustrating me. She does this everytime. A few minutes ago she made a break for it and I had to run and catch her and place her back on the paper. I know she has to go because she ate before I placed her on the paper. I am thinking about giving up with the potty pad/paper training and just teaching her to go outside because that's the only thing she seems to understand. I don't know what else to do. |
Hi... I posted on your other thread. What's wrong with her going outside? |

In my opinion, these pups develop a preference pretty early about where they want to potty, etc. I have one girl that uses newspaper and one that uses the outside grass. It took me a long time to teach my inside newspaper girl that it was also okay to use the grass, too. Sounds like yours has already developed a preference and I would go with that, if she is a puppy. Maybe later you can introduce the newspaper, but it sounds like she is just getting confused right now. |
MyLilyRose, Just a few quick sudggestions... Put your paper, right in front of the exit to outside. The next time she Potties (wherever) blot it up with a Paper Towel, and slip that in-between some of the newspaper at the outside door. Make sure you have a good Scent Neutralizer to do the "wrong" places with. I think that once she has that Scent reference, and when she goes on the Paper, be sure to praise her. As all this occurs, she'll get used to going to the door to do her business, and some even have trained theirs to bark, when they want out. If you have a proper enclosure outside for her, maybe you should consider installing a Doggy Door. I have one and it's the most convenient Doggy accessory I have ever purchased. However, I must say that a Door is not for everyone... There's been a discussion on the should and should not's at http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...nvenience.html Good luck ! |
Furgie does both...she is 8 months and I think we are really really close to being trained. Why don't you try the pee pads instead of newspaper? I would think it would absorb better and make less of a mess...they also come with a scent only detectable to the dog that encourages them to potty there. For us it was alot of positive encouragement...I would watch for when she had to potty and when she gave the sutle signs I would then put her on the pad and say go potty...it has been a process, I was about to give up on the pad, she prefers to go outside, but if I don't let her out in time, she ususally will go on the pad....it is alot of work! good luck!!!:aimeeyork:) |
Alice won't poop on her wee wee pads. If I don't take her outside in time, she goes right next to the pad on the floor but she pees on them everytime now- she's 6 months old, I've had her for 1 month and before that the only thing she knew was not to go in her crate (she will also pee outside when she's out there). I know your frustrated, trust me I understand. I will say though, making her stand on the newspaper isn't going to do any good because she has no idea whatsoever why you're making her do that. It only took less than a week for Alice to use the pad every time she had to pee inbetween going outside and the only thing I did was everytime she'd start going on the floor I'd move her to the pad and when she did use the pad I praised her. I think the scent that's infused into them makes all the difference and if you really would rather use newspaper there is a spray you can buy that has the same scent that's in the pads. I've tried everything to get her to poop on the pads also (not a huge problem since I've learned when to get her outside) including putting the poo on the pad and leaving it there:p but she won't |
Check this link out... this is the system I use, it has papers under neath it, it's easy to make and I believe there are instructions on how to start them with it... Harley will go inside and out with this. but not when he uses puppy pads. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/gen...while-ago.html |
I use the pee pads and my little girl potty trained very fast. I kept her in the kitchen and I always reminded her to go peep. When they do go on the paper I read another forum and the lady said make a party out of it. Reward her with a treat. It takes time but your baby will catch on soon. They love to be rewarded a treat. As far as inside or outside we like the inside because we live in the country. Too many predators like coyotes, bald eagles and owls. Hope all goes well for you. |
deonk1, Was it this picture you were referring to ?... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/att...1-11-10.18.jpg IF so, that looks like a very interesting idea... Liquid drops through, solids suspended...ok, But I do have a suggestion if used... I'd put a piece of Plastic underneath that device, Hardwood and Carpet can really be damaged by lingering Urine, and... I still think that getting whatever type device one might use, placed near or toward the outside door to the Potty area. That should create a habit for his animal in going the right direction for that. MY thought that if you can get them going toward or to the door, going through it won't be that much a bigger step. |
