Any yorkie owners that are Katrina survivors? I was wondering if there were any hurricane Katrina survivors out there. Or any of you that rode out a hurricane with your babies. We live an hour Southwest of New Orleans and were spared the worse of Katrina. But, we did have 80 mph sustained gusts and no power for 3 days. We did evacuate for Katrina. First hurricane we ever left for. By the time Katrina struck, my yorkie Lacey was already gone. But, we did ride out Andrew together here at home. She was just a 7-month old pup then. And we got almost the full brunt with 100 mph sustained winds with higher gusts. And no power for 8 days. Lacey stuck clung to my mom all night. But, did not suffer from any post tramatic stress that I could tell. If any of you experienced a hurricane with your babies, I will be interested in hearing your stories. |
Gosh, this thread did not get any responses at all. I guess not many on the forum live in hurricane prone area like I do. It does not have to be Hurricane Katrina, but any other hurricane experience with your yorkie? Or severe weather event like a tornado? My other passion besides yorkies is the weather. |
nope no hurricane experience yet... thank god..... |
I was in Rita..... |
I did experience Katrina but before she became a category 4. However we survived Wilma. I brought Kujo home 5 days after she hit out area, thanks goodness we got power the same night. I had to drive to another county for him to get his shots, because about 90% of my county still did not have power at that time. In the middle of all that disaster, I found comfort in my new baby. |
We are in Baton Rouge, so we had high wind from both Katrina and Rita.....the dogs did well, they just watched us as we kept going in and out and looking out the window....lol I guess we were their entertainment. Angie |
WE live in 1.5 hrs north of the MS gulf coast & we evacuated to my parents' house. Even at my parent's house we got LOTS of wind damage & power outages. Our apt. survived THANK GOODNESS, just minor damage to the side of our building. Ginger weathered the storm & heat like a pro! |
Survived both Katrina and Rita Although we are in west central MS, during Katrina, we had winds gusting to near 70mph or higher. Had a tree fall and hit the garage (no damage to vehicles thankfully!), were without power for 10 days, but we all survived, including Gabby and Gage. They both knew something was coming...Gabby stayed real close to me and Gage sat on the back of the couch looking out the window, then would run the length of the couch, go back and look out the window again until the winds picked up...then he moved to my lap. When Rita came through, we were on the far eastern side of the storm, experienced winds up to near 40mph and had another tree down. This one fell across the driveway. The babies were really nervous for this one as well, sticking close to us. Hubby suffered severe trauma to his face trying to clear the tree from the driveway - one of those "freak" accidents!! He's had 2 surgeries to reconstruct his nose and is looking at one more, maybe 2 to hopefully complete the work. Considering that all the docs in the ER that night said he should not have survived, we'll take the surgeries, no matter how many they are! And I speak for Gabby and Gage when I say we've had enough of bad weather to last us for a while! My heartfelt prayers go out to all those who were affected by this past hurricane season and who are in worse situations than mine. Thanks for starting the thread and allowing me to share! Have a great night. Suzi |
When we rode out Andrew, we experienced 100 mph winds plus higher gusts. The eye scraped the coast of my parish (Terrebonne) before coming inland. The eye made landfall only 25 miles to our west, putting us in the most dangerous part of the storm. I had just turned 16 and was only a week into my Junior year in high school. Lacey was just a 7-month old puppy. I remember my mom having to hold her all night. What she hated the most is when my dad boarded every single window up. She threw a fit. She loved looking out the window. After Andrew passed, we were 8 whole days without power. Surprizinly, we only had minor damage. Just lost some roof shingles, trees, signs down, power poles down. We did lose one property though. Our fishing camp but it sat right near the entrance of the Gulf of Mexico. Only 2 walls still left standing. After being 8 days without power, the heat became unbearable. So, my dad decided to go to Sears to get a generator. We took Lacey for the ride with us. The generator took a wrong turn coming from Houston. My dad said he was not leaving without his generator. Since we were all in one vechicle and my dad drove, we were stuck. Some other families had the same idea and stayed too. So, that is how we ended up sleeping in Sears with our yorkie; Lacey. Another family had 2 of their yorkies spending the night; too. But, Lacey did not want anything to do with them. Being the only dog in our family, she was not used to other dogs. They ordered pizza for our supper and had donuts ready for our breakfast. We arrived at Sears around 3 p.m. that afternoon and did not get to go home until 9 a.m. It was miserable sleeping in a sleeping bag on a hard floor in a department store. The ironic thing is that as soon as we got home with the generator, the power was turned back on! And we did not get to use it until 13 years later for Katrina! And another weird thing is that my place of employment is now Sears! |
