Barrette or Band Bows? Which do you think is better? I can't imagine that I would be very good at putting a tiny rubber band on a teeny little pups head, lol. :p |
Use a small band all the time....just don't put it close to the scalp....have to train those wee show potentials, get them use to wearing a topknot and a bow.... |
Bands are much safer than barrettes as barrettes can be a choking hazard. With that said, my bow customers are split 50/50 on the bands or barrettes issue! Bottomline it is whatever works best for you. |

Agreed - Ladymom & Mardelin are right, bands are definitely safer! That being said, it can be a challenge to use the tiny bands on the back of the bows. You may want to consider a band insertion tool (which helps to stretch the band so you don't have to try to get your fingers in that tiny opening). For my customers who want barrettes or clips, I always advise them of the pros/cons and possible choking dangers. Although my barrettes are the safest barrettes/clips I can find (nickel plated & tested to be lead free), I still recommend you monitor your little one(s) if they have a barrette on. Consider your yorkie's temperament too - will they try to get the bow out & chew on it? While beauty is important - safety comes first. :) |
I use the bows with the alligator clips. But I do put a band in Beamer's hair first, then I put another one in about an inch away from the first one, then take a third band and I fold the topknot down so the second band meets the first band, and I put the third band around it (forms a "puff"), Then I put the bow in. Strange I cannot handle putting in the bows with the bands on, but have no problems putting the bands in first and then putting the bows with the alligator clips in. |

@OP, Beamer's Mom brings up a good point. If you want a topknot, you have to make it first with bands, then just clip the bow (barrette) underneath or pop a bow with bands on top. The bands on bows are for placement only, not to be doubled, twisted, etc. You should never try to make a topknot with a barrette as they are too small to hold much hair. You can pop them apart if you do. They should just be clipped on as an accent. Practice makes perfect. Experiment with a few different backings and see what works best for you. |

When I make the topknot with the bands, I put the band in, then I slip the band on to the end of the comb (between the last two teeth) and use that to stretch the band around to double it. Incidentally I learned how to do the three bands in the grooming section, there is a neat pdf book there that illustrates how to put the bow in. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...book-free.html there is so much invaluable info on YT. I have learned a lot since joining. |
I've found some really thin flat elastics to do the top knot then I clip a french barrette or alligator clip through the knot to secure it . It does take a lot of practice but she's so patient with me :) The rubberband ones get tangled in her hair and it either pulls her hair out or i just end up having to cut them off which seems wasteful to me. |

I use bands for Jett and clips and bands for Bella. The clips are to me easier to use. I put 2 small bands around the top knot and clip the bow under the band. Double stability and safe! AND they NEVER come out!!! Works great for us. Jetts hair is very thin on top, so bands are easier and safer!! |
