Intrducing myself & Flash to you! Hi everybody! My name is Sharon and my Yorkshire terrier Yorkie's name is Flash. I will be a first time puppy owner on April 9. I am picking him up on Saturday and I am so excited! I just had a few questions for all of you with experience with yorkies. All pups are different, I realize that but approx how much dry doggy food do you put in his dish. Flash is 10 mths. young and weighs 12 lbs. I would like to feed him good food also. I am starting out with what he eats now which is purina dog chow because that is what he has been eating at his resue shelter now. Any suggestioons? Also, any comments you would like to send me of things you think I should know, I welcome with open arms. Thanks!:) |
welome welcome welcome!!!!! coco's 4 months and weighs 1.7kg... i feed her 1/2 of cup of royal canine puppy food a day. i take that 1/2 cup and divide it into 3 and feed her at 7.30am ,12.30pm and 6.30pm feeding is different depending on the brand of food & age & weight :) make sure u ask what the puppy's been eating and continue feeding that for a week as the puppy adjusts to his new environment and u can start weaning out the old food and introduct the new food the week after :) |
Welcome to YT and congratulations on your new addition, Flash!! What a cute name!! :p |
Welcome Sharon and Flash, I feed Lucy- 15 weeks weighs 3.3 lbs 1/2 c puppy chow, I leave it out all day for her. every morning I top it off. |
Personally I feed Taste of the Wild (the foul) here it's grainless no red meat, meat by-prodcut etc and has quality fruits and vegis and the price is right. Mine almost 10 pound Yorkie get 1 cup kibble a day 1/2 a feeding RAW and prey model or BARF are also to be seriously considered; mine get a RAW lunch, I use Stella and Chewy's Duck Duck Goose Dinner Patties, or chicken breast and hand feed fruits and vegis. Yep, carrots (baby) right out the bag we ppl here also eat etc out the refrigerator...corn in any dog food or meat by product is a sure sign of it being a bad food; Dog Food Reviews - Main Index - Powered by ReviewPost A lot of ppl here feed Orijen & Evo (pricey but then again we're talking Yorkies not big dogs) or Blue Buffalo & Innova (has grains-rice isn't bad but many grains cause a warming effect equating to an itchy reaction or worse). These are great foods though too IMO depends on what type you are looking to feed. Treats: I LOVE Zuke's Mini Naturals and plain chicken breast especially for training you feed a lot and need safe and designed for small dogs First time dog owner advice: No one tells you (even vets) about toxic for dogs concerns-seems everyone knows about chocolate, but raisins, oak, onions, garlic, grapes, mushrooms, etc, a lot is very dangerous for dogs you have to research and educate yourself here. Raw hide kills despite it being widely sold as a dog treat, it dog chewy roulette many give it but don't know the risks until it's too late. Bully sticks are preferred by most here, I use Dogswell brand jerkys: mellow mut, breathies, healthy hips etc. personally. Read all you can about Yorkie specific issues, hypoglycemia, Collapsing trachea-use a harness for walking not a collar-I only use harness period here. YT is a wealth of information; you found the right place. Congrats-there's an unspoken 'rule' here-just kidding;)Everyone wants to see dog/pup PICS!!!:D |
Welcome! That's great you are rescuing the little man. Congratulations. |
Welcome to YT. Flash is such a cute name. |
Hi there and welcome to YT! :) Although it varies how much food and how often depending on weight/age etc. I feed Bella (nearing 6 mos old and 5lbs) 1/2 a cup twice a day of dry Halo brand puppy food and 1/4 of a can of Halo brand wet food mixed with dry at dinner time. Sometimes she doesn't actually finish all her dry food as she would prefer it be the wet food ALL the time! :p I do however, get a mixed case of the wet food because it comes in 4 different flavors and she starts getting picky if I feed her the same thing over and over. My vet was against her solely eating wet food as he said it's not great for their teeth to have it too much. P.S. Flash is a super cute name! ;) |
Welcome to YT! Love the name:) |
Hello and welcome to the wonderful world of Yorkie ownership, as you will soon figure out they own you and not the other way around. I also feed Sophie Kate Halo, 3/4 of a cup a day half in the morning and half in the evening. Sophie Kate is grazer so I leave her bowl down for her now. As far as treats Sophie Kate tends to like people treats like a bit of banana, baby carrots, Cheerios and her favorite is an ice cube. |
Hi there, I soon as Flash arrives home I will post his picture :) |

Congrats on your new baby. I would suggest as others have to read the label on the specific dog food you plan to use. How much to feed varies by brand and weight of your dog. |
Hello and welcome Sharon and Flash. Buster gets feed Orijen 1/2 cup a day 1/4 in the morning and 1/4 at night. I also will add green beans, lettuce, carrots, to his food. I also will add a LITTLE eggs, cottage cheese, plain goat yogurt, and meat to his food to make it more appetizing. I prefer to use organic ingredients. When you give treats make sure the portions are small because they add up quickly! I was not diligent with Buster and as a result he is overweight and it is surprisingly hard to get the weight off. |
Welcome to YT!!! My Oliver was on Purina after he was rescued as well... he is now on Taste of the Wild and he loves it! I went to a local pet store (don't get me wrong they don't sell pets... just pet clothes, leashes, food, treats, etc.) and they were able to give me several samples of food that have been several suggested to you on this thread... and I transitioned him over a week and his belly was fine. I can't wait to see pictures!!!:p |
