First time yorkie mom here!
 
HI! We just got a yorkie on Sunday to add to our family. He is the sweetest little boy and so much fun. He is 12 weeks old and weight 4lbs. He is very snuggly and wants to be held all day long. Our 3 year old daughter named him Snoozels. :p He is doing well with potty training as long as we take him out ever hour. We have been having a little problem with sleeping at night and I could use some advice. We had him in a small foyer area blocked off with is pillow and pee pee pad. He would cry for about 20mins the first two nights and then go to sleep until 7 or 8am. Well we decided we need to put him in a kennel because it is just not functional having him in the foyer. So we did last night and he cried and cried for ever. He finally gave up and went to sleep but not for a while. So my question is what is the best way to get him comfortable with sleeping in a kennel? Any other advice you would like to share with a first time yorkie owner I would love to hear any and all of it. Thanks for any help! :animal-pa

Snoozel is a cute name. My Jewely was a cryer at night and it helped her to put the kennel where she could see me. She would cry untill she saw me lay down and then she would curl up and go to sleep. Good luck and welcome to puppyhood

Hi welcome to YT and congratulations on your new baby!! :)

My best advice to you that worked for me was to place his kennel on a nightstand next to you. He just wants to be able to see you :) I even sometimes would have to keep my hand in there to stop him from crying til he fell asleep and eventually it became routine. Another thing you can do is drape a light sheet or blanket over top of his kennel (make sure its not heavy) so that it will be pitch dark for him. That sometimes will help them sleep as well. Best of luck to you!! Be patient, he'll get used to it and end up sleeping in bed with you!! :p

Thanks for the help ladies. I was holding him and fell asleep so I tried to put him in his kennel at my feet while I am on the computer and he curled right up and went to sleep. So I think this might work! Thank You so much for the advice!

Welcome to YT and congratulations on your new puppy. You may also want to get an x-pen to use during the day when you can't watch him. You could put his bed, food, water, and piddle pad in there.

What is an x-pen? How much should he sleep on average? He seems to be sleeping a lot during the day but he is also sleeping at night so I am not sure how much he should be.

Welcome to YT. He may need an excercise pen to use during the day. Water, pad ,etc can go in there. Good luck

He is out and playing alot of the day. He has a three year old chasing him all over. LOL He is very happy to play with his toys alone too. He seems to be adjusting well I just want to make sure we are doing it all right. He did have two pee pee accidents today. :( But all the poops have been outside. :) He didnt have any accidents yesturday so hopefully we are still doing ok in that area. He sleeps ok at night but still cries the first hour or so in his kennel at night. I didnt put him in our room because our daughter still sleeps in there and I didnt want him to wake her. So not sure how to help him not cry the first little bit at night in there. He can be very very loud. :(

Other than that we are doing ok over here. I need to find him some shampoo and conditionar. I used baby wash on him last week but read on here I shouldnt do that so what is a good one for him. He has very soft fluffy hair right now. Thanks for any help.

x-pen is about the same thing as a playpen for a baby or it can be one and the same . You may have one already, since you have a three-year-old.:)

So what do you need this x-pen for? Right now if I need him to be unsupervised I put him in the foyer that is blocked off or in the kitchen blocked off. But for the most part, he is playing with one of us or laying on the couch. I have been letting him out to potty every hour and that seems to be working ok but sometimes he doesnt need to go so he just runs around. :cool:

Any help for bedtime. I cant get him to stop crying when I put him in the kennel. :( He will play in the kennel at his own free will and go in and out of it all day. What am I doing wrong? I know he would sleep comfy and great in our bed but we agreed we dont want to have him in our bed. So I am at a loss. :confused:
