Can use some advice PLEASE I am having trouble with Isabella anytime we leave the house, she's 16 months old, and this is somethng that started about 2 months ago. I crate her when we are not home, and my husband and I work opposite shifts so she's not alone more than a couple of hours. She goes into the crate when I tell her too, but when I leave she goes crazy, jumping, biting the crate, crying , she even goes pee in the corner of the crate and then it's all over her paws when we get home, the other thing is, I put a blanket on the bottom of the crate so she's not laying on the metal, and she chews it so bad I have to keep replacing it,and I'm affraid she will swallow the peices. I can't give her any stuffed animals to keep her company, she will just destroy them, I do put in one of her kongs or other hard toys and I give her a few cherrios. I've thought about leaving her out of the crate and just gating her in the kitchen. Any thoughts, ideas or suggestions????? I feel so bad for her :( |
I would give gating her in the kitchen a try, see if maybe she just doesn't like being cooped up for the hour or so it takes till you or your hubby gets home. Maybe something scared her a couple months ago and thats why she freaks out now. Also she may be suffering from sep. anxiety, something you may need to look into. |
I'd go for the expanded Kitchen floorspace as well, and... you might try leaving the TV or a Radio on... Get some tougher toys... rope, balls, like that... Make a specific place to potty, out of the way (paper/pad)... Make sure your chairs are pushed up to the table well... Check the latches on the cabinets, some pups are resourceful. Good luck ! |
Sounds like separation anxiety, too, with the jumping, crying when you leave. Search for the separtion anxiety training threads and articles and read up on how to deal with this most effectively. With some training she can learn how to deal with the occasion of your leaving and her alone time. It is a learned skill for some dogs - others come by it naturally. It can develop at most anytime in a dog's life due to several things but is most common with new dogs. |
The radio is an excellent idea , someone on here advised me on my thread about that and it calmed olly down , there was no mad panting when I returned from work. Try the kitchen but doggy proof it first, lots of dangerous cleaners ect around in there. |
If the expanded area idea doesn't work, I use the tv here because it changes and they are used to it...especially if she endangers herself...might try a behaviorist after the below Dogswell Mellow Mut,jerky or Rescue Remedy, liquid drops Practice leaving and coming back for a moment then minute, etc don't come back in and talk to her...ignore her when you first come it-it takes time strange she spontaneously started (without a trigger) but start separation anxiety training and ease it with the aforementioned homeopathic remedies...I use Mellow Mut chicken jerky....but many ppl on here talk about Rescue Remedy. |
thanks all Thanks everyone for the great ideas,I am going to give it a try gating her in the kitchen with the radio on, I will start slowly, just perhaps running out for a few moments... |
Try leaving an article of your clothing in her crate or bed. This seems to help some with separation anxiety since your smell is on the clothing. Worth a try!!:):) Good Luck!!! |
Try keeping her in the kitchen with a gate up. That's what I do with Sammy. Also I put the radio on and all my bottom kitchen cabinets have baby locks on them so he can't get into anything! Good luck!! |
