First Thunderstorm Oliver had his first thunderstorm experience and it did not go well. He was up shaking all night. I held him and tried to comfort him... any advice? |
Aww, poor Oliver. One of my friends here reminded me that it often better to make light of things and distract our furbabies, rather then comfort them when they are scared because this reinforces the idea that there is something to fear. I did this with Max and he isn't bothered by thunderstorms. With every flash and crash, I would happily say "ooooh, look at that!" or "wow, that was loud, how about that?" With Teddy, I comforted him and he is still scared. He will play fetch or do tricks for treats during thunderstorms. I am going to focus on doing those things in the future. |
Thank you so much... that is so true. I should treat it like I do with my sisters children... I always take them on the porch and oooh and ahhh over the storm so they aren't scared. Thanks!! |
mine didnt do well with it either so for a while i would turn the tv or the music up so they didnt here the crashing and as time gos by they are much better when it happens |
He will get used to it in time but some of it isnt bad. One time when we had thunderstorms my Jewels was real restless and nervous and it ended up that we had a tornado warning later in the morning |
Keno too experienced his first thunderstorm, surprise, he actually seem to like it. Never have had a dog that actually seemed to like storms. He is 6 months old now. He also loves to walk in the rain. My Bichon hated to get her feet wet, let alone walk in the rain. |
Lola and my Scottie Bailey are deathly afraid of storms. I have to put them under the covers so they will stop shaking. It works everytime. |
None of our dogs seem to mind thunderstorms. They have no reacations at all. I think I fear them more than they do. |
Rizzo's first t-storm...he woke me up as he tried to claw his way underneath me :( rather than trying to sooth him I just put him in his crate and we both went back to sleep...sounds cruel but since then he ignores the storms, sleeps through them better than I do :) |
I wrap Callie in a towel tight (but not to tight so she can breath) and hold her close to me and talk to her. I plan on buying Callie the thundershirt and trying it because it pretty much does the same thing but will let her walk around in it. |
Tibbe doesn't fear storms but does fear some other sounds. I distract him by redirecting that fear energy into another physical activity and it has worked so far. |

We had our first TS of this year the other night. Elsa totally ignored it but Tia sat up in bed and stared out the window waiting for the "light". Her head was cocked side to side. Then her and I rolled over and went back to sleep. I am so glad she did not freak. |
they have somehting out called the thunder shirt or something, it is something they wear and I have heard it helps, IM not sure about sizes and such though |
I've never heard of thundershirts before... I will research it! Thanks for the advice. We get thunderstorms this time of year almost every afternoon.... I would just be panicked if I was at work and we had a horrible storm. Maybe I'm just being over protective because of Oliver's puppy mill history... I don't want him to be scared. :( |
