Good age to spay? When I took Marley to get her shots a week ago the nurse told me that Marley could be spayed now (at 5 months of age). However, I am kind of hesitant to get her spayed with her being so little. She is 3lbs so I feel like it might be hard on her body...am I right in this? Or do you think she would be okay? I also don't want her going in heat so I am kind of stuck on what to do! |
I would wait. You really want to wait until her permanent teeth are in anyway. That way you could have any retained baby teeth removed at the same time as the spay. The point is to avoid having to put her under anesthesia any more often than is necessary. She may gain some more weight by then. |
Gees, I've herd some very conflicting opinions on this issue... Wait... Don't Wait... I too decided to wait as yorkieusa has recommended, I've had one animal so far who went under anesthesia, and I was very nervous as to how long it took for it to "recover". (actually a couple days) My little Becca will soon undergo the procedure, and I may be looking for a Vet, who can do that Endoscopic Surgery. I think that would be less traumatic than the way I've herd it being done. Anyone used this method ? |
I had Roxie spayed when she was 3 years old (a few months after I got her). She handled it like a champ...and they didn't even give me any pain meds for her or anything. |
Sadie was 7 months and had her baby teeth removed at the same time. I was so nervous. She was a little over 3lbs. I would wait for another 2 months. JMO |
Rmama, Thank you for your words of encouragement, and yes... Both of mine take an inoculation like it was a Mosquito Bite, they didn't even blink, even with the Electronic ID Needle. I think I felt it more than they did, seeing how big it was ! It's odd.... MY two are rough and tumblers, with the occasional nip and yelp. I smile, and shrug my shoulders when that happens, BUT... Allowing someone to cause them pain, is almost too much for me to deal with. Strange... I've been accused of being overprotective...oh well  |
Apple was 1 yr. old, when spayed, and Cha Cha was 1yr. 4 mo. old, when spayed...I prefer the girls to be a little more mature, as long as there is, absolutely, no chance of being bred... |
They typically say that the age to spay/neuter is at 6 months...however, for smaller breeds, sometimes the vet will wait until they are older, or have gained some more weight. Fiona was 6 months when she got spayed, I told the vet I wanted to do it a week before she turned 6 months so she wouldnt come in heat, he said no, she will be fine, well, needless to say, the sunday before her scheduled spay, she came into heat, so I had to wait 3 weeks to get her fixed. I would tell you to have bloodwork done before hand, to make sure everything is in range....Good Luck! ps. if she has any remaining baby teeth, they will extract them for you during her spay! |
My vet said my pup had to be at least 5 lbs before neutering (obviously this wouldn't apply if your dog was probably never going to reach this size). As soon as he turned 6 months I had him neutered, I wanted to make sure he didn't start marking behavior. I would recommend waiting until all of your pup's adult teeth have come in. I didn't wait for that and now I am looking at the possibility of having retained baby teeth pulled which means more anesthesia. My dog has a lot of adult teeth that have come in behind the baby teeth and the baby teeth are not loose at all. My vet is going to recheck in another month and see what needs to be done. |
Belle is almost 5 months old and she weighs 4lbs. When we at the vet a little over a week ago he mentioned that we could schedule her spay any time. But she has barely lost any baby teeth yet so I am opting to wait until she's about 8 or 9 months old. That way if she needs any teeth removed she won't have to go under anesthesia twice. |
Thanks for the advice! I think we will wait a couple of more months...at least so we can see if she has any retained baby teeth like most of you said. There is no way she could get pregnant..the only other dog she is around is a female and she is spayed. :D |
All three of mine were between 9 & 10 months old. I felt they weighed a little more & also had their permanent teeth in so any baby teeth could be removed. Everything went well with the surgery and the healing process (with one exception.... an upset tummy (Seeger) for a day due to the anesthesia). |
I got Chloe spayed at 10 months- I decided to wait because she was small, having some health issues, and retaining baby teeth. She lost her last tooth at 8 months old. |
Wrigley was 6 1/2 months old and about 3 1/2lbs when she was spayed and her baby teeth removed at the same time. She did great! |
My vet will spay at 5 mos and over. That being said he recommends we spay her before first heat because it reduces the risk of ovarian cancer or something if I remember correctly. The risk of ovarian cancer after a first heat cycle only increased by like 5-10% I think, so I decided to wait until she is atleast 6 mos because she is still so small to me and I worry for her. |
