I Hate This Time Of Year With everything blooming and this pollen. I have several trees in back yard one of which is a an Oak Tree and when srping arrives so do the Oak worms falling off the tree. Not real live worms but those things that fall off when the leaves start to bloom. They are all in my yard, my house, every where. My new girl Alex, she is having a ball just running and cahsing the squirrls and every time she comes in all these things are hanging off her, in hair, tummy, leg's, you name it she is covered. And these things are hell to brush out the hair. Does anyone else have this problem and if so any ideas on what I can possibly do to make it more managable??? |
No we are not having that problem, I wish we were. We are still snow covered.:) |
UGH! Yes, I am battling these oak seed pods too :mad: I leave 1 of our Madan brushes & a bottle of Johnsons' no tears pump conditioner outside near the door so that I can brush my 2 out before they come inside. It's working ok but I'm still finding them in the house every now & then. I jokingly suggested we use the leave blower to blow them out of the tree but even then they'd still be all over the ground. I wish it would rain! Also thought I'd mention beware the bees & wasps that try to get the last bit of moisture from these seeds! |
oh.. yes we have been having the same problem. With me it is the black olive tree... ugh. I have a shih tuz that has long white coat.. hmmm what a mess!! |

Agreed! I fight those things, too. Have to stand on the porch and brush Tibbe off before he comes in the house every time because of those, too. Then, just had the lawn mulched, it hasn't rained, so Tibbe comes running up covered in tiny grass bits also. |
You betcha! I have a huge oak in the backyard and also a pecan tree. They both drop what I call "worms". I don't think there is much we can do about them. Isn't there a some kind of large vacuum that can be rented to vacuum them up???? :D Well, sounds good anyway!:D It seems I'm brushing her constantly before they get too tangled in her long hair. If someone finds a solution, please share.:) |
Nope but be careful with oak in general...friend lost her dog who was chewing on acorns...she didn't know oak was toxic for dogs... |
OMG...I thought you were talking about real worms, at first!! We don't have that issue here, but the pollen here is awlful. We have to take Ian out very quickly to potty and poop, then wipe him off with a damp cloth. He has been sneezing since last Thursday. Cars here are covered with it to the point where you have to use your windshield wipers to get it off so you can see. The bad thing is...it's only March. This isn't even peak season. Thank goodness it's raining cats and yorkies so that should help. |
We used to have that problem. Now mos tof my trees, including 2 beautiful HUGE oak trees were taken by the hurricanes we had a few years back. I have one large oak in front and none in the fenced back yard. There are a few in the wooded land behind where we fence but I don't worry about that as the pups don't run in the woods. As nice as it is not to have to rake, worry over the oak pollen, deal with the oak "worms" and acorns & scoop all of it out of the pool ...... stilll, I miss the shade and beauty of those trees! So -- if it helps try to look at the positive side, the good things the trees bring. Helping? ;) |
the best way to get rid of that kind of problem is really simple, cut the tree down. when we moved into our new home the broker asked if we wanted a tree in the yard and both of us said definatly no, we don't want to rake leaves or any of that stuff. :D |

Ziva has been rolling in the "catkins" (oak worms) for a few weeks making her sneeze and us too- Raining like crazy this morning ,hope it washes them all out of the neighbors tree so we can finally clean them up! |
Yes it was horrific for her because she actually is part of a rescue and fosters and rehabs dogs...this one she had taken in as a foster and well ya know broke the rule of adopting the dog out and decided to keep her because of her special needs and having bonded so strongly with their family...anyways she was completely blaming herself for having not known oak was toxic...really it's not like when you go to the vet's for the first time they give you a list...I think she'd lived in that home for many years with many dogs and it just happened that once, it was all very quick seem the dog got sick and died withing a few hours...very sad, she was a very small dog also. hmmmmmm OP can you net the tree to catch it all? |
