Help with barking/escaping ? I just got my new pup Oliver last weekend. And we are having a problem! We have been trying to section him off, but he will escape no matter what. :( I haven't had this problem with my yorkie Holly, so I have no idea how to keep him confined, or teach him escaping is a no-no. I tried a doggy play pen and he climbs right out, a dog kennel, but somehow he unlocks it with his teeth, and I've tried a carrier with a mesh panel, and he chewed through the mesh, and now the kennel is no more good, and it was my favorite for Holly. :( I've tried the ticking clock, and I've tried letting Holly be in the playpen with him, he just does not like being confined to an area. I wouldn't mind, but we cannot let him roam all over the house while we are gone. He is almost 4 months, and the sweetest little thing ever. He's fine when we are with him, but I can't let him have separation issues, because I went through it will Holly, and it is a bad cycle to have, and took alot of patience and training to break. If anyone could give advice on what I should do to keep him calm and comfortable without needing to escape that would help. It breaks my heart to hear him bark & cry until he escapes. |
Try a child's play pen with slats...like the wooden baby gate kind... Training for separation anxiety is basically showing you will come back but only returning when quiet has happened or being there visible but ignoring (definitely no eye contact) using supplements like Dogswell's Mellow Mut jerk and Rescue Remedy (both homeopathic) help. |
Thank you, I will look into supplements if I can't get this under control. :( We never, ever respond to him or even acknowledge he's there when he goes off with the whining. Every night we get two hours sleep because of the barking. One night my boyfriend caved in & let him sleep on the bed. We woke up to a nice pile of poo on our sheets. :thumbdown Aaaah, the awesomeness of new puppies! Although, it is funny when he does something naughty my 2 yr old yorkie looks at him like... "You're in trouble mister!!" |
If you can crate him I use the "kennels" the airline approved one 4x bigger than my dog LOL a lab can fit in our mini schnauzie's |
We were using the airline kennel, it was wayy to huge for him, and he still managed to use his teeth to open it. Should've named him Houdini!! I finally just turned our guest room into a doggie play room with a kiddie gate to section it off. It's only a matter of time before he figures out how to escape again! |
