Don't know what to do
 

Okay,
So crate training at night has been relapsed with Gizmo, however I'm beginning to think he's just one of those dogs that doesn't like his crate.
With him being sick though, I really want to be by him just in case. I'm thinking about taking his blanket and just putting it on our bed and having him sleep with us.

Is that bad?
Am I a quitter for crate training? I'm mean we'll still use it to go out or what not, but I don't know I feel like I failed him but I don't want him to be really sick and I don't hear him from in his crate.

I gave up with the crate training on the third night....I just couldn't stand to listen to her cry. So in my bed she went & has been there ever since...so 9 weeks now. She sleeps great & so do I. She wakes up once in the night to go pee, then back to sleep she goes all through the night :)

Strange thing is, she'll take herself off to her crate (which now just sits in the living room & is only used for car trips) and sleep in there during the day. I made a cover for it out of an old fleece blanket and it's like her little den.

And you don't roll over her or anything? I know that sounds stupid, but I think that's what I'm afraid of most.

I'm not an expert by any means. I know how hard it can be to stick it out. I guess do what you feel is best.

That was the thing I was the most afraid of too...especially cos she was so young...I got her at 6 weeks old :eek: But she is great..she snuggles up by my neck and sleeps, or sleeps in the crook of my arm. I actually like her being right next to me, cos I feel her & I feel when she moves.

Your post had me thinking. We're going to try one more thing with the crate. We're bringing it into the bedroom and basically letting him lay with us and then put him in the crate so he's in the bedroom with us.

We'll see how it goes. I just gave him Robitissin (SP) DM as prescribed by the vet, so when it comes to coughing he should be okay.

Please say some prayers that this works better.

Hello! I have a Gizmo also!! He hated the crate!! I tried for 4 months and it was starting to cause fights between me and hubby( He would cry for up to an hour at night) so ever since he sleeps with us! He curls up right again my chest/neck and we sleep through the whole night. Gizmo is 3.5 pounds so hes tiny and we have never rolled on top of him :) Good Luck!!!!

Well, we let him sleep on us and then I tried to put him in the crate and he had nothing to do with it. So, he did end up sleeping with us and he slept through the night. I guess I know what we have to do now.
He lays in his monkey blanket, curled up at the end of the bed and didn't make a peep the whole night.

I've never had a crate. Andy does not know what one looks like lol. Reason is though I am retired and home with him all day and night . He sleeps and slept with me after his surgery as well.

Callie hated her crate but I used it until she was potty trained. I was terrified of rolling onto her and I sometimes can sleep through a lot and I didnt want her to get into something that would hurt her when I was sleeping. She was a crier too very very much so.

My tiny dog slept at the foot of my bed on his blanket or I would scoot down and he slept above my pillow on his blanket. If you are afraid of rolling over on him you might try a baby basinett right by your bed until he is older. Then if he crys you wont have to make the trip across the room.

My fur babies never had a crate. Or should I say my little fur babies never had a crate. We do have 2 basset hounds that sleep in their crate every night in the sun room they love it. As far as our little fur babies we have three little fur babies. Two of them sleep in either my bedroom or my room mates bedroom on the bed of course. The little one sleeps in a x pen in my room because he has a habit of chasing my cats in the middle of the night. He is perfectly happy as long as his pen is near my bed.
Zach our Yorkie used to climb out of the x pen every day so we gave up on using it on him. Zoe our shorkie cried so hard and so loud we were afraid we were going to get arrested for animal abuse. Now Oliver is our baby shih tzu and so far he's been so good about sleeping in his pen that we never thought of stopping him from using it.

With my girl, we tried the crate, maybe a couple of weeks (can't remeber), but she never got used to it. At first my hb would lay down next to the crate and put his figers in so that she would be able to feel him. Nini would get up very close to his fingers and fall asleep. Then he would get up to go to bed and she would start crying again. It was so sad :(

I was told by the lady I adopted my girl from that the crate was best because dogs are used to living in cave like places, they feel more secured in them, etc. So, I insisted on the crate for those days and tried everything to make her like it, toys, treats, softer inserts.

Nothing worked, she hated it :thumbdown I would wake up at night and look over at her in her crate and she was usually up, leaning against the bars, staring at me. It broke my heart every time. So one night I just picked her up and put her in my bed with me.

Wow! It was like a treat for her, she was so happy, kiss me (which she hardly ever did) and slept all night :D Never did she potty on the bed even when she was going potty every 3 hours. She's never seen the inside of a crate again, unless she went in it to grab a toy (it became the toy storage) :p

With Nicky, I put the crate up on the bed the first night (by this time, I had a crate made with fabric, not entirely bars). He kept whimpering all night, so I let him out and kicked the crate to the floor ;)

I put a plastic cover on the mattress, just in case of accidents, but they have never wet the bed. They don't like crates and I respect that :)

As far as rolling over them...we've been lucky, it's never happened. My hb used to roll over me and I would wake up with black and blues over my arms and legs (I used to be tiny), but weird, he never rolls over our babies :confused:

Rosie sleeps in bed with me. I tried putting her on the floor by the bed in her own doggie bed. However, my hubby gave in and put her in the bed one night. Well, she has been there every since. :D She sleeps curled up next to me. The best thing is that I have her trained. If he rolls over to close to us she growls at him. :p I love it!! We have never had any problems with her being in the bed with us. She has left with us since day 2 that we got her.

He slept next to my hubby and me perfectly, and even got out of the way if we had to move or turn over. He was a good boy.
So night time we're doing good. Now it's day time when he has to go in the crate that we need to work on.

Sigh, thank you all for your advice. Now just need some prayers that he stops peeing in his crate during the day.

I like to get mine crate trained when they are puppies because I figure there will be times in their life where they HAVE to be in a crate, like for instance if they ever have to go to the vet, or stay at the groomer, etc. Also I travel frequently with mine and they have to stay in a carrier either in the car or on the plane. So mine both slept in the crate until they were potty trained- once they were trained, they were allowed to sleep in the bed. I love having them sleep in bed. But, I also like that in certain situations, I can put them in a crate or some other kind of carrier and they will go to sleep and be quiet.

That's exactly what we're trying to do. We'll put him in the crate when we leave for work or whatever the case may be. But I think night time is cuddle time with Mom and Dad and he seems to be doing better throughout the day with actually getting a good night's sleep with us. He's eating better, playing better, and just acting better especially with him being on antibiotics.

So, hopefully we're doing the right thing with putting him in the crate when we leave. I know he's going to get adjusted, it's just the extra encouragement that I needed from my wonderful YT peeps.
