grooming question Okay I'm new to this forum and a First time Yorkie Owner. I'm just curious. I took My Mitsi to the groomers a while back They kept Her for eight and a half hours and they barley even cut Her Hair. When I got Her back She was exausted, majorly stressed and refused to sleep in Her crate (We leave it open so She knows She knows She has space just for Her) so now I'm going to attempt to keep Her trimmed up Myself. (I'm a hair dresser but a Yorkie is quite differnt than a head) any advice for How to trim Her face and top of Her head? And Is it normal for a groomer to keep Dogs that long? Any advice would be great. |
There is a section here on grooming and there is a video. There are videos on You Tube as well. Some groomers do keep them a long time. One in my area makes appointments but they don't take them in that order. My groomer usually takes about three and a half hours for both of mine. Eight hours seems like a long time. If you do go back to the groomer, take a picture with you of a cut that you like. I tell my groomer what I want done with each pup. |
Thank You Jeanie for telling Me about the videos. I have never Owned a Dog with Long hair so those will help A lot. |
By the way, welcome to YorkieTalk. I am too chicken to groom mine. They have had some bad hair cuts, don't worry if you mess up, it grows back. Even my groomer has made mistakes. It doesn't bother me. I like her a lot, she doesn't groom dogs over 25 lbs, which is good as Maggie does not like big dogs. Again, don't worry if you make a mistake. Yorkies are so cute, they look good even with a 'different' cut. There is also a lot of good suggestions for clippers and brushes in the grooming section. |
Hi, I am a groomer, and i never keep dogs that long, unless the owner needs to leave them there till they get off work. But some groomers will have all their dogs for the day come first thing in the morning, and keep them all day. I prefer to have them come right when their appt is, and then i call owners as soon as they are finished. If you want to go to another groomer, you should call around and ask if you can drop off right when the groomer is ready, and pick up as soon as possible. This is much easier on the dogs. |
When I took Callie to the groomer for the first time they only kept her for four hours eight seems kinda crazy long but she did not do well after that. We started getting the "zoom" service where they would groom her and then call me to come get her so she wasent sitting in a cage all day then we went to having a mobile groomer come to us. |
Huh longest mine have ever been at the groomers is for 2 hours usually one hour....we schedule an appointment and go then just like a vet etc...I know some people just drop their dogs in the morning in their way to work and pick them up after but hmmmmm seems from my groomer it's more the person's choice not hers. Then again I usually stay at the groomers for the visit...i only recently dropped my dogs and ran some errands (groomers is a city over). |
I help my yorkie cuts her hair :) but becareful with the scissor, you might cut her skin. just cut whatever you like, is your style. |
8 and a half hours?! WOW that is a very long time! Usually a groomer will only keep them for a few hours 2-3 or something like that. I wouldnt use this groomer again. There are many tips in the grooming section from owners who choose to groom their own dogs, plus many videos on YouTube. Good luck! |
Thanks so much for all of the advice I watched a video and I did manage to trim My Mitsi although She did not enjoy it to much so I'm still working on Her tummy hair and ears. I'm so happy to find so many friendly Yorkie Owners here. I have had Mitsi for a year and a half and just recently decided to try a Yorkie forum and I will say its great |
I bring both of mine at the same time and they are never there longer than three hours top. I drop them off at their appointed time and when they are done they call me and I pick them up. |
1 Attachment(s) Welcome to YT:)! Sophie's groomer has specific appointment times and Sophie is always ready to be picked up in an hour and a half. In that time Sophie gets a bath, haircut, nails trimmed and teeth brushed. She comes out with a pretty little new scarf each time since she won't keep a bow on her head. :D. |
Groomers in my area tend to do the same thing. They have all the dogs dropped off in the morning then the groomer and/or her assistant bathe all the dogs and put them in cages to be cage dried by blowers. After the dogs are dried they start the actual grooming (clipping, trimming, toenails etc). This is a way to groom more dogs in a day (assembly line style) rather than doing one start to finish at a time. That is why I learned to groom my dogs at home. I hated to leave one all day at the groomers. Teresa |
