Are rabies shot safe for yorkies? Lulu's groomer said she has to be updated on her shots. The only shot I agreed to is the rabies shot. Was wondering if those are even safe? |
Any vaccine has the potential of side effects with a dog but most dogs dont have side effects. Most groomers usually require the bordatello also since kennel cough can easily be spread through their facilities |
Of course there are side effects to any vaccine but each yorkie reacts differently. Sassy has had ALL vaccines and done beautifully. No problems at all. She has a chihuahua sister who is allergic and blows up like a balloon when vaccinated. It just depends on the dog. Here rabies vaccine is required by the state. |
When Bentley gets his rabies vaccine, he gets a shot of benadryl first. That is what his breeder told me to do and no ill effects have occurred. |

Well, most places require rabies vaccines by LAW. Most states are every 3 years for rabies, but look into your city/state for their laws regarding rabies. Jackson had a reaction to the lepto vaccine but has no issues with rabies, and it sucks but it's something that legally has to be done, and I wouldn't want to not comply. We do give benadryl beforehand just in case. Currently, most vets are following the new protocol and that is DHPP as puppies (so approx. 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 15 weeks, I think), then the one year booster of that, and then DHPP every 3 years. But those are not required by law. I do get Jackson his bordatella vaccine just because we've been thru kennel cough with him twice now (both times when he was not UTD on it) and we're around other dogs a lot and he goes to the groomers. I found a mobile groomer who did not need any of his shot records though and I love her! |
We have to have vaccines in our city to get a dog license and without the license it's a 250$ fine. We do the benadryl first tho and she was fine. |
Rabies is the only one by Law that is required in my state. You also can't get the city licence without it. What confuses me is that when my dogs were puppies and had their vaccines, the vet said the rabies shot is only good for one year, then you have to get them the next year , and it is good for three years. SO is this true? Their are different tpyes of rabies shots? it did not make sense to me. |

I live in an area that had a very serious rabies outbreak in the last couple years and we still only require it every three years-even through the public debates Dr.'s and Vet's were asked for input to see if the law should be modified and here it was determined a three year vaccine is more than sufficient and thus there was no reason to require a one year issuance and amendment to the law. |
I really stressed when it was time for Bitsy to get her rabies shot (in SC they have to have it by 4 months old) she did fine with it, no problems at all:) |
