Question about shots
 
So, we brought our baby home a few weeks ago. Our little buddy just got his his second round of shots today and he's passed out right now. It was an exciting day out for him.

Anyways, it seems that different vets have different procedures for these shots. He wasn't with us when he got his first shot at 8 weeks, but here he is at 11 1/2 weeks and we brought him in for round two. Vet A said it is at 12 weeks, which would mean I'm early, and Vet B said I'm late and he should have received it at 10 weeks.

Vet A has 3 total rounds of shots spread out from 8-16 weeks (3 DHPP + Rabies).

Vet B has 5 total rounds of shots spread out from 8-16 weeks as well (4 DHPP) + Kennel Cough + Rabies.

I always thought it was 3 rounds with rabies. But I'm no expert and would LIKE to just trust the vet. But when there is disagreement between the people I trust, I'm not too sure what to think.

What schedules were your pups on?

I hear ya!

Our vet is right in the middle with 4 rounds of shots total + rabies and bordetella (kennel cough) is optional. I basically think my vet thinks the 1st set of shots, given by the breeder's vet & not him, doesn't count towards immunity as it was given too early to be effective.

It's difficult to know what to do when you rely on experts to know & they contradict each other. I was also dealing with the fact that due to not having a dog in over three years, moving & starting with a new vet that I hadn't built up any trust in, then add the whole whether to give the lepto vaccine or not & my breeder being 3 hours away in a whole different environment than I am, and it just made it more confusing and stressful.

My pup is ending up with: dhpp, dhpp, dhpp+L, rabies, dhpp+L

Vet A sounds like he's closer to following Dr Dodd's vaccination protocol. Immunizations at 8 and then again at 10 weeks are too close together.

I follow Dr Dodd's protocol. It took some convincing to get my (old school) vet to go along with it. But after she did some research, she agreed that it is appropriate for my dogs. It bums me out that she has since retired, so now I have to get the new vet on board.

Vet A is closer a bit more right on. Rabies on a Yorkie not until 6 or 7 months of age....Any thing over 3 rounds is over killl and can be more deteremental than good.
