Strange Question, Need Advice... I take my babies for a daily walk around a local sub-division that has only a few houses but a nice long road. Today Satchmo was particularly interested in eating the sun-baked earthworms that litter the pavement. I must have had to stop and try to get at least a dozen from him. So here's my question.... Will eating this chewy, sun-baked earthworm jerky hurt him in any way? He came home and ate his food so I don't think it effected his appetite but does anyone know if he keeps doing this if it will hurt/bother him? I know he got to swallow some because by the end of the trip he was doing the "chomp chomp swallow" before I could get in there to pull the thing out. Anyone else experienced this? |
My boys try to go after the baked worms too. I keep them away. Here is what I found on the AKC website: Dear Lisa: I have a 14-month old pug who eats earthworms every chance he gets. He eats the same amount dry dog food as his brother but eats the earthworms as snacks during his outside time. His brother does not eat earthworms. I'm sure hunger isn't the issue. Is he missing something in his diet? Can the earthworms be harmful to his health? Should I prevent him from eating them? – Unearthed Delights in Delaware |
I have never experienced this. I dont know if it will hurt him but I would try to stop it maybe feed them before the walk or if you free feed do some treat training before |
Here is what I think, as a general good overall safety strategy for your dog, do NOT let them eat anything from the ground. Teach drop it, or leave it. Beyond the various bits and bites, that may be innocuously harmless, there will be those that are harmfull, and be forewarned while I don't know if this trend has gotten into small towns, but some big cities, have experienced sick sick ppl strewing poisoned ladened hot dogs or other items that dogs might eat in our city parks that have a high population of ppl who love to walk and exercise their dogs in them. |
Mine love worm jerky, too. We are heading in to that season again, aren't we? It's so gross, but sometimes no matter how much I try I can't keep mine away from these forbidden delicacies. |

Thanks for the article! I do free feed but I haven't tried treating before the walk to see if it is just a "yummy, treat" deal to him. I have never had a dog show any interest in them before so I was curious as to whether it was a good, bad, or indifferent situation. We are working on training. Satchmo is only a year old and hasn't been with us only since last summer, and we had a lot of untraining to do. He had never been outside at all (and he was 5 mo when we got him). "Drop" is not his favorite word and he isn't consistant with it yet. I will have to purpose to keep him from nibbling while "on the go" Thank you again :) |
