What to do? Yt'ers, I am going to give Lipstik Heartgard Plus chewable, but saw it is for dogs up to 25 lbs. So my question is do I split one chewable in four parts. Lipstik only weighs a little over 3 lbs. I had given a full one to General Patton not thinking about this, so do you think I should give Lipstik a full chewable, and give General Patton a larger piece(Patton is over 9 lbs  )of the same one? Thanks for your thoughts as always |
From what I was told by my vet, you give the whole chewable to the dog, no matter their size. |
Thanks! |
That's a big size difference. Our vet told us you could split the pill, but they have also told us it won't hurt to give them the whole thing. (One dog threw up while we were giving it one once and I couldn't tell if he ate it or not. The vet said it was OK to give him another...it wouldn't hurt.) I think either way you'll be OK. |
Thanks! Any other advice? |
I wondered the same thing about the weight when I first started to give the Heartgard. My vet said give the whole chewable and from what I was able to find online it is recommended to give all of it. One of the reasons I read was because the active ingredient is not always distributed evenly so one half might have most of the ingredient the other half none. |
My vet told us that we can split it in half and give a half to each of the girls...that way it saves the waste of giving them the whole thing and it is more equal to their actual weight...I am not sure...but this is what we do for our girls....speaking of this, it is time for my girls meds!!! |
If you aren't comfortable with that product you could try Interceptor. It's for dogs 2-10lbs. |
I would ask your vet , just to make sure. |
