New here and question about puppy. Hey guys, I am new here and I am glad that I found this site, it has a ton of information! I live in north Carolina and I am owned by 3 yorkies. Hugo 9, Chloe 5, and Harley (my recent addition 17 weeks). When we got our newest pup Harley at 9 weeks, he had a small open font, which has completely closed. :D He had terrible separation anxiety, which I know was probably from him being parted too early from his mother ( will never get a pup younger than 12 weeks old again). The separation anxiety has gotton better except at night. We had been letting him sleep in his crate in our bedroom to stop the crying and that has worked, but after we take him out early in the AM he doesnt want to go back to sleep. Hes a whinner!! Our other 2 dogs sleep in a large pen together in our living room, but Harley wants no part of that. I have tried to gradually move him out our room as I would like for him to sleep with the others, but he cries for hours and we give in. ANy advice??? Another problem I have noticed with him, is I think he may have some sort of psycological issues. Example, when I am prepping their food or when I take him out of his crate, he runs around and around in circles. He does it at other times also. He will not stop running around in circles until you stop him. I am thinking of mentioning this to my vet because I have never seen a dog act like this before:confused: He is proving to be the most difficult puppy that I have had yet. Thanks for any advice! |
I really don't have any advice for you. I just wanted to say "HI" and welcome. I have owned yorkies for about 25 years now and really never came on to YT until I got my last little guy - who also is a handful. This site is definitely loaded with great information, as well as some very knowlegable breeders that will most likely be on here to give you some pointers. Anyway, just wanted to welcome you and hope you get to love this site, as much as I do. |
Welcome to YorkieTalk.com. You will learn a lot here. I, too, had a problem dog when I first got him. I thought my Tibbe was psychologically damaged when I first got him at 9 mos. as he ran in circles all the time, whined/screamed at the top of his lungs, among many other odd behaviors. Tibbe, however, is an only dog so he had no possible issues of stress or issues from other dogs around. But I started just working with him, slowly teaching him basic obedience, positive reinforcement, stopped any unwanted behavior with a gentle hand, perhaps an "uh on" said softly and redirected him where I wanted him to go and after a couple of weeks of this persistent but very positive retraining, he began to respond to it. I was very persistent with his training and always very calm, loving and positive in my training interactions with him, mostly using just body language, my hands and eyes to redirect unwanted behavior. Soon, his wild behavior began to calm down and I found out my dog was just very needy and very, very intelligent. He loves training, seeking out hidden objects via smell and other games that we play. Research Obedience and Behavior Training resources here, read up on it and stay gentle, loving, positive and persistent. I hope you enjoy YT as much as I do! |
That running in circles might just be a yorkie trait because my Jewels does it also when shes excited |
I guess I'm just lucky, neither of mine run in Circles, never have. However, it's sorta odd... I use a "Hobby" type Breeder, he takes your name and when he allows a Litter to happen, you get your pick according to the list. What I'm getting at is, that I had to "take" both mine when they were just over 8 weeks old. When he says they're here, you get your butt over there ASAP, IF you want to have the pick of the littler. Anyway (I'm' rambling sorta) My Male Sneakers has Separation Anxiety, but, MY Female Becca does not ! And, like I said, we got them away from the Litter at about the same age. I'm just saying that taking them at a young age, may not be the reason for Anxiety. It's very difficult to understand, why one does and another doesn't. |
