yorkie breeder/exhibitors in north texas? Hi everyone, I am interested in hearing from any of you who know of reputable breeders/exhibitors in the north Texas area. We want a tiny female puppy, VERY healthy and are wiling to pay for that, however not willing to go overboard on the price. She should have a baby doll face, preferably black and tan or darker blue and tan, mature at about 4 pounds. Our last yorkie (put down just this past Satruday) had several genetic health issues and we are determined to avoid this time around. We want to hear about breeders who only breed from healthy, perhaps champion, stock and focus only on yorkies and maybe also breed maltese, although that is not the breed we want to purchase. We would really appreciate your input. |

- 4lbs actually isn't a tiny size for a yorkie, it is actually within the standard range 4-7lbs, I would recommend if you are trying to avoid health problems that you look for something at least 4lbs, because when you start looking for a breeder that purposely breeds smaller than standard dogs, you may see more health issues. There are of course exceptions to this rule, but in general the bigger the pup the healthier. You want to ask about the size of the mother, she should be at least 5lbs, because any smaller and you start seeing delivery problems. I also caution you from looking for a breeder that advertises "teacups" as this is a breeder made term to try and make more money. -Look for a breeder who shows, if they do not compete there is no way to know if they have quality dogs. This means the price may be higher, but at the end of the day the dog will be far healthier. I'm not located any where near you, but this site provides great resources, so I hope you are able to find a great breeder in your location. Whatever you do, do not rush into a purchase without doing some research. Many reputable breeders are on this site, or members have purchased from them, if you are questioning whether it is a good breeder, do not hesitate to ask. Good luck! |
I would suggest you attend the dog show at Fort Worth this weekend. I don't have the details but, you could ask Mardelin (above poster) or check here: Fort Worth Kennel Club - Saturday March 26, 2011 |
I am attending that dog show this weekend. Thanks for the reminder, though. |
Let's try this again! First, thank you Kendra for your sound advice that was delivered in a polite and non-judgemental manner. I really appreciate your attitude. Second, let me assure ALL of you that I am indeed a responsible pet owner and not the kind to ever support a puppy mill again. Been there and paid that price! Third, I know that there are folks who show dogs and occasionally have a puupy in the litter that is not show quality but will fit the description that I described in my above post. I am not looking for an unethical breeder who would breed for those traits only. We are looking for a certain appearance in our dog and we believe that there are yorkie parents and puppies out there that have that appearance and are from a reputable breeder. I do not believe that you have to show dogs in order to be reputable and trustworthy. Just as though I do not believe that you must be a Christian in order to be a good person. Any dog who comes to live in my home can count on having a very charmed and wonderful life. In our research on YT, folks were saying instead of asking about the breeders to avoid, why not ask which ones are the best to patronize. So that is what I am doing. Anyone in north Texas want to step up and help? We are interested in hearing about any positive experience that any of you have had with breeders anywhere in north Texas. We will be going to the dog show in Fort Worth this weekend. That is where I met you, Mary, remember? Thanks! |
You might try contacting, Rosemark .... Rosane Fett (rfett@rosemarkkennel.com), or Lee Grunewald.....Dallas (Bluebonnet YT Club president). Perhaps one of these ladies knows of a breeder that has a female on the small side. |
Thanks so much! I sent Rosanne an email. |
Regarding your specifics on the type of pup you want ..... I think two out of the three (size and final color) are going to be difficult to guarantee in a 12 week old pup. You never know how the coat will change as they mature, and the size can't be guaranteed, either. If I can make a suggestion .... why not try and find an older pup? Maybe one that an exhibitor kept as a show prospect, but as they reached 9 to 12 months or so, it became evident that showing and breeding wasn't going to work out for that particular dog. If a female stays smaller than anticipated, (a four pounder, just like you want), they wouldn't be suitable for a breeding program and therefore there is no point in showing them, either. That type of dog could be available for a new home at a relatively young age (an older pup). At that age, you will have a much better idea of the final size, facial features, coat, etc. I got my second Yorkie at the age of 9 months, she became available because she was a show "reject." These little "rejects" (I say that lovingly) have already been trained and handled so much to get ready for the ring, they can be so easy to work with. With mine, the second you started to mess with her topknot, she would drop down and lay flat and very still until you finished. Put her on the table at the vet's office, she didn't like that cold steel table, but the second the vet started examining her she would stand perfectly still for the entire exam. And of course, they are already used to being on a leash. |

The best person to contact is Ella Patterson the breeder referral person for Bluebonnet. She would best know where to send you. |

Bye the way Mrs. Grunewald is my mentor, I do know that at this time she doesn't have anything available to what you are requesting. |
