house breaking.....AGAIN!! Sadie is 6 yrs and Lillie is going to be 5 yrs old. Sadie was VERY difficult to house break! Lillie, on the other hand was very easy....I have 2 pads in different ends of the house...they will not pee and poop on the same pad. They were doing very well...then all of a sudden they decided it was too much for them to go to the pad...They go where they want!! It's getting VERY frustrating to say the least! I love my little furgirls to pieces......I don't have an area where I can fence off and let them out to do their business....Both hubby and I work different hours so the pads are a god send. I washed my floors with detergent and bleach water...and have blocked them off from the other rooms...they are NOT happy about this but it seems to be working....somewhat...I am going to (when the snow is gone!) bring them out in front to train to go outside. but in the meantime I was wondering if any has ever tried bitter apple spray for deterring them from using the same spots. I could really use any suggestions here.. Thanks in advance! |
As far as I know...bitter apple is to deter from chewing what it is applied to. Others who are more knowledgeable can suggest what may work for you. I hope you have success with getting them to go outside to do their potty...it wasn't hard for me with consistency. |
Even tho you clean with bleach and detergent...it doesn't get the smell out completely and they can still smell it...I would clean with Natures Miracle...its an odor cleaner and the best...you can get it from petsmart....I would clean with the natures miracle and than clean with bleach water...Bitter Apple is for chewing not potty mistakes. |
By chance do you know who started going in the wrong places 1st ? If so , you should probably take that one in to see the vet to rule out a UTI. At their ages it's unusual for them to all of a sudden change their potty habits & often there is a reason for it. |

I don't know if there is a spray to deter them from going some place, but I know at Wal-Mart I saw a spray that you spray on the pad to coax them into going in the spot you want. I'm sorry I can't remember the name of it, but it was on the shelf with the puppy pads and the carpet spray for pet odors. I'm actually thinking of getting some. If I make it over to the store today I will post the name of the spray. |
We had a few periods where potty training seemed to backslide- I find it is when I am away from home a lot. Just start over from the beginning, blocking them in a small area with the pad and then expanding to give them more space. This usually only takes a couple of days and then its like the light bulb goes off and they remember where they were supposed to go! Good Luck. |
Nature's Miracle is the product you want, not bitter apple. You aren't supposed to use anything else to clean the spot before applying. Follow the instructions on the bottle. We are doing this with Nicco, who is 4 and also backsliding on his potty training for some reason. It's too soon to report results, but I am keeping my fingers crossed - for you and me!:) |
potty training 4-5 month old we just adopted a yorkie a few days ago (4-5 mos old) and we have a 2yr old yorkie already. the new pup, lily, lived w. a breeder for the 1st 2 mos and a rescue facility for the last 2. the 1st night we were delighted that she used the potty pad to pee. since then, she has used it a few more times when we took her to it sev. times/day -now she mostly goes on the floor for both despite just having been taken to the pad. we are having her stool tested today bec. there is blood in it & the vet yesterday said otherwise she appears to be in good health. other than potty issues she is well adjusted/very sweet. our existing yorkie, nola, now has started peeing on the bedroom carpet (marking) and refuses to use the same pad as lily and only goes poop outside so far- so we put out a separate pad in a different area for nola. they growl at each other a few times/day but have not attacked each other - we will continue to monitor them and hope that they will be okay. we let lily sleep outside her crate the 2nd night and next few nights - last night she peed on the bed so we crated her again. i am home during the day and take lily to the pad sev times w/o luck - i am going to gate her in the kitchen when i cannot watch her and/or to try to improve her habits. any advice is very welcome so we can try to regain control. |
