Air travel with "teapot" yorkie? Ok so I am moving from CA to TX and originally I wanted to fly but I see a lot of airlines have you store your dog in a carrier under the seat in front of you. Bag heights are around 8-10"inches and this would certainly squish my 11pound yorkie. Are thier any air lines that let you put the dog in your lap (in carrier) or have larger spaces for them? I wish he could have his own seat. If the airline says 8" high is the tallest but you get a taller soft carrier that can flex to fit under the seat can you use that? Help is appreciated! |
I doubt it. That's due to liability issues. Some flight attendants will allow passengers to have their pups on their laps. That is up to them. |

Please contract the airlines in advance (all contact info on the second link) and be sure to get in writing from everyone what they tell you if it's okayed...and be prepared to have to put you dog in cargo or have your dog watch/boarded...unfortunately. Things to remember if you have to go cargo-you want your dog loaded unloaded inside never out doors, use a water bottle on carrier to prevent spills, zip-ties on kennel door to prevent opening if dropped...make sure the airline is familiar with safety and competently shipping dog in a climate controlled "cargo area" see if they offer a pet cargo attendant, be sure your dog is on the same flight as you, have your dog chipped and wearing a break away collar with tags, microchipped, I've heard some people have specialty shirts made for their dog to wear with their contact information printed on it just in case, the kennel needs to be adequately large and fully and multiply labeled, with your contact information (regular and while on vacation) etc. |
My mom flew with Korean Air from Toronto to Korea and she used a hard case for my 9.5lb mickey. But my mom flew business class so there was more room but she was not allowed to take mickey out. I've contacted Korean Air regarding animal transport because I will be flying from Korea to Toronto via Korean Air with Coco when i'm done with my contract & they said I can use a soft case as long as its got a frame. the dimension i was given was 115cm (Length+width+height) Which makes no sense because i could have a high bag but really short length & width. So I personally measured it when I flew with Korean Air same route there & back I sat on different sides of the plane and measured it. and bought my carrier according to the height. When you book your flight, please ask them to seat you where there will be the most under the seat room because some rows have this chunky box below the seats limiting its height. I hope this helped. Usually soft sided bags can be slightly out of the measurements because they will squish a little to fit- but really only slightly- if they are too much bigger and they don't fit totally under the seat, you will most likely be refused from bringing your dog. In cabin dogs must fit under the seat in front of you. Otherwise, you must have them travel as cargo. |
I thought it was weird though at petsmart they had a lot of "airline" type bags but they were all to big for the flight I was going to take. They say "approved for most major airlines" but I checked jetblue, virgin, and american and they all have 8-9" at their upper limit of hight. My poor big yorkie would hate being squished like that. I would like to know which airlines take these "approved" bags- some are as high as 11" but I couldnt find a single airline that said thier bag could be that big. :confused: |

Flying I know what the airlines say about your "pet" flying in cargo, DON'T DO IT. DH worked for several different airlines, in different states, so different air ports, NOT GOOD. Oh the horror stories, poor babies, "most" air lines will let you use a soft sided carrier, a good way to check it out is to take your carrier to your air port counter, have the agent check it out, of course a non busy time but most are happy to help, if it's too big, you can return it to the store where you bought it. Also, the web site www.dogjaunt has a list of sizes for most planes and seems to be pretty up to date. Maybe others have used to pet shipping planes, the specialized ones, or have had good luck w/the shipping, but I have heard way to many horror stories. Besides you aren't going that far CA to TX just a couple of hours, flight wise. Anyway good luck. Sprocket is also a "teapot" and I have a large Alex bag that we are going to use to fly with and it has soft sides, remember our babies just curl up and don't take up quite as much room as we think. :animal-pa |
I do not really think that an 11 pound dog is too large to fly in the cabin with you. Cooper (10lbs) and I took a 2 hour flight very successfully last year. I used a medium sized Sherpa bag which he fit nicely in. The bag in a little higher than the space in the seat in front of us, but it squishes down perfectly to fit. Cooper laid down the entire time and was able to turn in the carrier. Mary-Alice, the owner of Dog Jaunt : Traveling with a small dog has a 13lb Cavalier KC Cocker Spaniel who travels everywhere with her. If it weren't for her, Cooper and I would never have been able to travel. I struggled with information. What airline are you taking, or have you not decided? |

Can you buy a seat for your dog to ride on? (Not just the OP but in general-I mean seriously the price of taking your pet vs a seat you might as well let them travel in style and comfort IMO)? |

LOL...my Bro is so cheap he wanted to have his kids ride on his his wife's lap...from CT to CA! I was like seriously I'd buy a seat for my dogs...and have wondered since then! Speaking of struck nerves...I don't get it...just sayin'...if 'BIG' people have to buy two seats sometimes...then I should be able to buy one for my 'BIG' dog... I vote letter writing campaign... I travelled with my King Charles Cavalier who weighed 22 pounds for 15 years. We would fly from Canada to Key West about 4 times a year. He had a large Sherpa bag and was very comfortable in it. In the smaller aircraft the top of the bag would go down a bit but he didn't mind it at all. He has sinced passed away and now Bella has a medium sized Sherpa and it is great. She weighs 6 pounds and a small would have fit her but having to be in there for such a long time I wanted her to be comfortable. I would get the large Sherpa and I am sure you will have no problems |
Pet Airlines....all dogs, all shapes, all sizes, many large cities, but I do not believe they fly Tea Sets and fine China |
