New house, Parvo infested? Dh and I are currently looking for a house to buy, we went tonight and looked at one, we are very interested. When we went in I saw a little chi outside, the owner let him and and took him for a walk while we were looking at the house. Well I looked at the Chi and he looked reallllly skinny, I am talking not healthy! I saw his ribs and backbone, but the dog was really hyper, besides the weight he didnt look ill, But then I started to think ( as we were looking at the backyard. He keeps the dog outside, he had his bed, food water, and by the looks of the food, it looked like Beneiful (sp) or somthing. Plus we got there and he wasn't there, then we all went in together and the Chi was outside. Anyways, what if the dog had Parvo or something catagious. I know Parvo can live on cement for years.,, How would you go about cleaning the backyard, and flooring (has wood floors all thru house) to make sure Pnut cant catch anything? Or am I acting crazy? |
Our dog got sick 2 days after we brought him home and he had Parvo. He lived thru it after LOTS and LOTS of TLC! The only way I know of how to get rid of Parvo is lots of bleach. We were unable to bleach our wood floors so the vet said if you ever get another puppy your best bet is to wait until it is older and has had all it's shots. We have an older dog and she was just fine thru it all. |

Why would you think Parvo? There are so many reasons that are running through my head about why this dog would be skinny and sickly and not once would I think it was Parvo. |

I'd be concerned about anything that could be icky from anyone else prior when moving someone new...worm eggs in grass waiting to infect my dogs, children and myself, fleas, bed bugs...I'm all parasite and diese paranoid, and I'd have a professional steam cleaning, painting, and pest control come in prior to actually moving in anywhere. Parvo than lingers on cement etc too the out door stuff is harder to clean up...of course I'd be concerned for what made the Chi look ill too. |

Even if parvo was living in the dirt there, I doubt Peanut would get it. Being 3 years old and I assume she has been vaccinated should provide protection. I agree that jumping to the conclusion that this skinny dog has parvo is far-fetched. So MANY other more plausible choices. If you do get a new home, I would wash down what you can with bleach at any rate, maybe treat the yard for any infestations of fleas (which can carry worms). Making sure Peanut is up to date on immunizations, flea/tick prevention and heartworm protection is the best preventative to use. If you are serious about that house, I would come right out and ask them about their dog. Just ease into it saying/asking, "you noticed their dog is very thin, has it been sick? If so, what with, as you have a small dog." We can over-stress ourselves with "what ifs" -- I know I have been guilty of blowing things out of proportion and exaggerating problems. I am better now than I used to be though! I finally figured I was spending more time worrying about things that never happened than I was enjoying the good "problem-free" days! Use caution, but don't worry about things that are not a problem yet. |
ur not nuts completely :p i totally understand being protective and buying a house that fits the needs of your dog. i bet it's just malnourished or maybe really old. i wouldn't lead my head right into parvo from the things you described. we bought our house because the backyard didn't make the pups have to climb stairs from a deck down or anything and went right out to the yard which was fenced and nice. i understand wanting a place for you puppy to be safe and healthy. i wouldn't worry about parvo tho. he's had his shots and he should be just fine. |
Wow, umm Ok I didn't think I would get some of those comments, but OK. IMO, I don't think I am jumping ahead of myself. I use to work at a Vet, I have seen and smelt the horrible bloody diarrhea, seen the very sick dogs that came in with Parvo, I have also seen owners bring in their dog saying " I don't know whats wrong she just doesn't seem to feel good" then being tested for Parvo and coming back Positive. So I have seen both sides, do I think this dog has Parvo? No, but I have seen cases where really really skinny dogs come back with Positive for Parvo with no symptoms, Amazing isn't it? So would I rather take the steps to prevent Pnut catching anything, if the chances were there, Yes why wouldn't I ? Why would I go in something that blind and think.. "Nah Pnut is fine he has his shots, nothing will happen." I think asking the guy " Hey I noticed your dog was really skinny..does she have health issues" really insulting and unacceptable. This family is already loosing their house, that is the last thing I would say to them. I already asked they guy if he has seen hawks, ( the house is back on to a big hill) He then told me Yes, and Coyotes, he told me a coyote took his other dog right in front of his eyes. So if you all think I am jumping ahead of myself then whatever, Its my job to protect Pnut, if its taking all precautions from spraying bleach to treating the grass, then that's what I will do. |
