Any Experience w/ Melatonin...vs Rescue Remedy? I have been using Rescue Rememdy for about 3 months for my little guy, and still having issues w/ Separation anxiety. When crated, he gets so panicked that he starts panting uncontrollably, clawing the crate door, crying and whining, tearing up his blanket, etc... It has even gotten to the point to him ripping some of his toesnails out and bleeding pretty badly trying to get out. Anyone with experience with Melatonin or advice on how it may differ from Rescue Remedy, I'd love to hear from you. |
Try a play pen instead of a crate if his reaction is so strong please. I used Dogswell Mello Mut jerky for my pup mill rescue with anxiety issues; separation anxiety, and fear aggression. I have heard many positive things about Rescue Remedy which is also homeopathic but I have never used it. If he's ripping toe nails off you need to get him evaluated immediately by both the vet and a behaviorist and stop crating as it obvious causes extreme distress as is....I could not put my pup mill rescue in a box, he went in fine but would panic once in there...you can create positive association (door stays open treats in it etc building up to door closed) with a crate but since you have a Yorkie please try a play pen that cannot be jumped out of. Play pen with a bed area, play area, food area and potty area, I prefer a 6x6 but a 4' x 4' area seems to be what most people use and is adequate enough I guess. Put the crate in it with the door open to create comfort with it. If what you are doing isn't working you should really be trying something else-especially if your Yorkie is being injured. |
I'd be very hesitant to use Melatonin considering recent research on it... Also a homeopathic sedative like Mellow Mut or Rescue Remedy is best but shouldn't be a complete and total supplement for trying something more functional and a better fit for your dogs in addition to training. Please update. |
Try a Playpen I got mine at Petsmart, but you should also be able to get one at Walmart or some other stores. They are meant for babies, but work great for Yorkies. Mine consider it their personal apartment within the house. I placed waterproof padding down, and all their stuff in there (piddle pad, food, beds) and they love it. It especially works great because I leave them there for long hours, and I don't have to worry about letting them out to potty. |
