Introduction I posted this in your rescue forum but thought I would introduce myself and Addys here as well. My name's Pam and although I live in Canada, I volunteer with NOLA Labrador Retriever Rescue (New Orleans, LA). I have two dogs of my own, a black lab and a border terrier. I joined your forum because yesterday, the founder of NOLA Lab Rescue came across a tiny dog, who appears to be a Yorkshire Terrier, in need and we had to help. The dog was found in a crate with a chain around his neck and matted in his fur. There was no food or water with him and next to him was a cardboard box with a dead 7 week old lab puppy in it. She couldn't leave him there or he would die so she loaded him in the car, stopped and got him a halter and leash and convinced her vet to open her doors on a Saturday evening to take him him. During the 2.5 hour ride back to her city and her vet, she fell for his charms. She named him Addys after a town they drove by (but replaced the "i" with a "y"). Addys has either 2 broken legs or 2 deformed legs (both front legs) and may also have a problem with his rear leg. We are praying he doesn't have Heartworm. Tomorrow, he'll get a bath and be groomed. On Tuesday he'll be neutered and x-rayed. Then we'll figure out how to help him and get him ready to find a new home. Any tips on health issues specific to Yorkshire Terriers that we should ask the vet to check? Also, any suggestions on what we should look for when we are ready to start searching for his new home would be greatly appreciated. |
Your story made me very sad! Poor puppies. I am very happy that Addys was rescued! I do not know too much about Yorkie health, however I have some ideas for finding him a home. With such a traumatizing experience I strongly suggest you find someone who has plenty of time to spend with him, where he will not be spending hours upon hours at home alone, like many of the yorkie owners on this site. Good Luck! I wish you, the lady who rescued Addys, and Addys Well! |
That poor little guy. Are they going to do any x-rays of his legs and have them repaired before adoption? Yorkies have liver issues and knee issues. I send him the best. Yorkies will wrap themselves around your heart in no time.:) |

My heart is breaking for this little boy. I hope he can be nursed back to health and that he finds a loving home. Please keep us updated and thank you for helping him. |
3 Attachment(s) Update on Addys (also posted in Rescue forum) The vet has said that Addys' legs are like that as a result of a birth defect and that there isn't a surgical option for him. The good news is that Addys is Heartworm Negative - that was a big relief! Addys' foster mom reports that he's a friendly, loveable, spunky little guy who gets along with all her dogs and is happiest curled up on or next to her. His legs don't seem to slow him down at all. He runs and plays with the best of him. When he runs, he does hold up one front leg and only uses 3. I've attached pictures of Addys after having his fur shaved off. You can see the deformity in his legs. Happily, Addys already has a permanent home. One of our board members has adopted several puppy mills dogs when they've been discarded - special needs seniors are her specialty. Addys is still young but her response was 'well then he'll be the youngest special needs dog in the house"! |
