My Yorkie's droopy ears Max is nearly 11 months old now His ears droop and stay flopped over. His left ear almost stands at attention when he perks up if he hears noises that get his attention. I googled about getting the ears to stand up straight and one site said it's an iffy proposition to train the ears to stand up if your loved one is over 6 months old. Anybody with success on doing this AFTER the puppy stage? And if so, what technique did you use? Seems like it amounts to shaving off a bunch of the hair on the backside of the ear as well as inside and taping the ear together in a fold inwardly halfway down the ear for about 3 days. I actually don't have a problem with the floppy ears, he's definitely a cutie with them that way. |
If one ear stands you can get the other one to just keep shaving and taping. I know a girl on here that got her 2 yr old dogs ears to stand shaving and taping |
So after you get it to stand permanently, it won't matter if the hair grows back, it will continue to stand? |

I've had clients bring in their yorkies for grooming with their ears drooping (some at a year of age) all I had to do is shave them and up they came. Keep in mind that if a dog's ears are drooping from the base it can mean the cartladge has broken down and it may be an impossibility to get them up. Another thing that one has to consider is the hereaditary factor. If the ear leather is very thick it is difficult to get the ears to stand. But, if one is diligent about working with them (5 days up and 2 days down) until they stand, it can be done. One thing I se Dr Scholl's Mole Skin (bought at a pharmacy). Cut the mole skin in the shape of the inside of the ear....making sure that it is cut to the edge of the ear leather. Shave the entire inside of the ear. Apply Surgical glue and press to the in side of the ear. |
The right ear appears to be the bigger issue. I need to see if it even looks possible to make it stand. I sure don't want to end up with only 1 ear standing up. |
When I got Beamer he was a year old and his right ear wouldn't stand. The groomer "tipped" his ear (as Mardelin has posted above), and it still flopped down. But all of a sudden one day it stood up! Both ears are still standing up. I just have the groomer tip them as necessary. |
I keep Remy's ears shaved. The Vet used to do it for me on her puppy check ups.. now I just trim myself. I got that advice here :D it works.:D |
