Grooming questions Hey everyone. So after a few visits the the groomers i've decided i wanna attack the grooming myself. BUT.... i have no idea where to start. I've read the pdf here on the site and i've searched the forums and haven't found anything really helpful, so... *first off, for those who do groom your babies, do you use clippers or scissors or both? *What is a good clipper set? I'm leaning toward using a clipper set and start with long blades and going shorter to experiment. I keep my babies pretty short but I dont know what sizes of blades the groomer uses. I scissor their feet and hygiene areas already. * Is there a specific way to groom? ie: different blade sizes for different areas? that is really all i have right now. i look forward to hearing from the experts out there. maybe a website/video on how to groom would be great (i cant find anything out there that are short yorkies) ~Rikki:animal-pa |
I am definitely not an expert but I'm trying the grooming at home. I bought a basic Wahl clipper set from Walmart for about $50 and a Madan brush sold I believe by 'top line pets' for $17app. Just do a search on the YT page for Madan and you should find the link. A good quality shampoo and conditioner; I use Coat handler which I bought online and nail clippers. I use a baby bathtub in our main bathtub so I don't have to fill up the whole tub. I think the most important part is to try to brush your pup at least once a day - I'm not too good at remembering but I try. My set of clippers are rechargeable - they can be used plugged in or not. There are different lengths of combs to use with the blade. The guard combs are great so the clippers don't go right down to the skin. My only problem is I just want to keep shaving Mabel and Darwin - it's a bit addictive - I might end up with chihuahuas!. I laughed when I read you wanted to attack the grooming - that's exactly how I feel - after all, hair grows back....doesn't it!!:D YouTube videos are interesting to watch also. Good luck with it! |
I keep my baby short as well. He wears clothes everyday! I bought a good set of clippers at petsmart. I usually use the 1 inch guard on his main body and then I use no guard on his paws. His face and "mane" as I call it, I just use scissors on. I just clip here and there until he looks like him!! lol, I know that sounds funny, but he has his look!! I got tired of my groomer never really doing what I wanted her to do. I just hate hate hate toenail clipping!! I usually leave that one for my vet!:) |
