new to site and new yorkie puppy help?? hello we just purchased our furbaby today and i would love some tips on potty training and general command training.. thanks so much |
Congratulations. Welcome to YT.:) If you'll check out the Training section, you'll find lots of tips there. You would need to decide how you want to train your little one. How old is your yorkie? I dual-train mine to pads and outside and use doorbells. |
thanks so much :) she is 8 weeks. She has been very very needy since we brought her home.. whines anytime she is put down. We wanted to try crate training i guess.. i really dont know what works.. never potty trained a puppy before. So she is whining a lot in the crate it is bedtime and she is not happy about being in there.. i dont want her to hate it?? |

I'm not a good one for advice. I've always taken mine to bed with me from day one.:D I'd just get up and we'd go potty in the middle of the night. After they grew a little, they could hold it all night. Good luck in whatever you do. There really is lots of info on crate training, if that is what you decide to do, in the Training section and lots of people here who have used crate training as their method. How do you like your new puppy by now?:) |
I bed trained...my bed ,with me, since day one. Never did the crate training. My Elsa was a little older than yours when I got her but her baby has been in my bed since she was about 9 weeks old. Yep, we have had two "accidents" but no more. |
I and Drake did not like the crate, I felt like I was putting him in jail. We bought the puppy playpen but I hated to zip him up in it so I put a gate up in the laundry room with his pen and bedding toys etc and covered most the floor with puppy pads. as each day passes we lose a pad so now we are down to 3 pee pads and he is doing so well. Soon we will be down to 1 and it is by the door so when we start training for outdoors. I did this with my prior yorkie and it worked great, we got to where she could roam the house freely and when she had to go she would go to the door and dance in circles, if someone didn't notice her she would then use the pad that we always left down. thanks for the help guys... i know i felt a little off about the crate being a jail as well but i read a lot about how its their den and what not that eased my mind a little... however I should have read up on it before we put her in there last night lol.. i dont think we introduced it right by slowly letting her explore it we just put her in there with a treat when it was bedtime and she cried for quite awhile.. and then this morning when i heard her wake up i took her out and let her eat took her out again.. and then put her back in her crate so i could go back to bed it was really early.. and wow she HATED that. So should i wait and not take her when i hear her wake up and just take her when i normally wake up? she had had one lil pee in the crate. I just feel like it is harder to take her during the night and then have to put her back in again and let her cry again? Should i just keep letting her have the accidents until she is old enough to hold it through the whole night? |
Welcome to YT! the #1 piece of advice I can give you is be patient. You got your little one 4 weeks too early, which means more patients, and a little more training for things like bite inhibition. If crate training is he way you want to go, stick with it. Cover it with a blanket to make it more den like. Give her only enough room to stand and lay down, anything bigger she will potty in it. Her being only 8 weeks means she will require lots of potty breaks since she is so small. That means at night time too mommy. :) |
thanks for the advise :) wow 4 weeks to early :( poor baby.. this is our first puppy so i really didnt know anything about when they should be given and all that. she seems to be doing really good with the potty training. But i do think her sleep schedule is off now.. she sleeps during the day and whined and barked in her crate all night last night. Should i just try to keep her up more during the day?? I am so glad i found you guys this forum has been really helpful.. thanks again |
Our yorkie was in a baby playpen when he was really tiny, then we graduated him to a larger play area. It consisted of his bed, potty pad, and play area. We gradually made the area larger and eventually took the "fence" away. Now he roams freely in the house and uses potty pads. He does however still mark here and there when we are gone. I think he gets mad at us for leaving!! :) He has slept with us at night since he was about 12 weeks old. He has never had an accident in our bed. He is now 2 1/2. I am getting ready to train a new puppy too. He is only 3 weeks old right now, so his mommy is taking care of all that!! But, I dread it! I hope he is as easy to train as Bevo was! |
