Hi my name is Alyssa and I am from Oklahoma. I am currently looking for the right yorkie for me. I am really glad I came across this site in my search for my special baby. I use to own a male yorkie when I was a teen in high school and someone stole him and I owned a small female that died from unknown cause. So now it's time for me to try again at owning a special baby. I am 28 years old and I am married with three kids. I know a lot of people don't like yorkies with children but my kids are great with our Jacks we have and I think the puppy will be fine. ^^ I would be very protective any ways. lol I just want to say it is very nice to meet you all and this is such a wonderful site. I really wish I came across this site 7 years ago when I bought my female from a puppy store in Arlington, Texas. I was very ignorant of puppy mills and brokers. Now from this site, I can see why her temperament was horrible. She never wanted to play and was very timid and scared of everything. Not a very fun puppy to have and one day about almost a year old she die. The vet looked her over but I didn't have the money to actually figure out what happened. I figure it was poor treatment as a pup in a mill or born with some illness. Either way I am hoping my new journey finds me a great baby that I will spend a long time with. ^^ It is very nice to meet you all and I hope to get to know you better.

You may want to take a passon a yorkie with 3 small kids. A JRT is a lot larger and no where near as fragile. I am sorry about the losses you experienced with your past 2 yorkies. I am not a breeder, but if I was, I would not sell you a yorkie pup at this time. WHy not just focus on the 3 kids and the JRT? You would be spreading yourself too thin, not have the proper time for then ew puppy unless you were taking it away from the kids, other dog, and husband. The time down the road would be a lot better for you. Also, buy the breeder first,, and then the pup.

Yes I can see your point and I have thought and thought about wanting one again. I know JRT are larger, mine weight 15lbs. I have two. So I would be looking for a larger Yorkie not one of the small ones that are too fragile. I know from experience how to care for one. My male I had was a larger Yorkie. If I remember correctly he was a 10lb boy. I am an at home mom and there is no way a puppy will take away from my kids. They are in school now except my youngest. I really don't see how it would take away from my relationships with my family, my husband would enjoy it as well. I do agree with you about finding a breeder. ^^

I don't see how a puppy is going to take away from my family when they would be involved and my kids would be great with the pup. As far as my JRT my 2 weight 15lbs. I am not looking for a smaller yorkie to own. Though my dogs have been around puppies before and never hurt them. My JRT's are really great dogs. ^^

I don't think anyone unless they are a broker or a inhuman person that abuses animals shouldn't be able to own a yorkie. So I have children, I am an at home mom and two of my three are in school. The puppy would be going to a loving home that would take great care of it! ^^ I think thats what counts! :D

:welcome4:If I could have afforded a yorkie when my kids were younger I would have had one. I remember a boxer mix we had that had her leg broken twice (reclining chair accident, same chair both times) But that was from my hubby not paying attention, not the kids. I'm surprised the vet didn't call animal control on us after the 2nd break...sheesh! I did throw the chair out much to hubbies dismay.

A lot of good info here, will be looking forward to pics, etc when you find your new pup. Like others said here, research the breeder, even if it's just throwing a thread out in the breeder's forum. It seems there is always someone who knows about them for good reasons or bad, or might have some links you might have missed if you tried google.

I wasn't trying to be negative...I hope that what I said didn't upset you.....it's YOUR right to have a yorkie if you want one!! Like I said, I have grandchildren and they are very careful with my yorkies...but I ALWAYS supervise them too...:)

I agree that if you want a Yorkie then that's your right! As long as it's going to a good, loving home so be it. I have children. 5 of them! Only two of them are still small. In fact, the purpose behind getting my babygirl was for my 1 yr old. He's had some medical issues from birth. The first time he saw a dog, the look on his face was priceless! I wanted him to have a companion to grow up with. He is sooo gentle with her too, it melts my heart. It's always supervised though.

I know this will probably go against the majority here, but this is JMO. I am not a breeder or an expert by any means.

I agree a yorkie 10 lbs or more would be fine but The problem with getting a puppy is you dont know what size it will grow to. I think you should try to get one from someone rehoming one or try to go through a rescue if you can find a rescue that will let you adopt because some wont with young children. We waited untill my Daughter was 5 to get our puppy. He is now 11 lbs and has worked out to be a good family dog. After him I got a female and she is 6 lbs and wants nothing to do with children. Your children could be taught to be very careful around a yorkie but accidents happ-en also you will have neighbor children in your home and they havent been taught how to be with a small dog

I would also suggest to you to lok into adopting a yorkie who is at least a year old. That way you will know the dog's temperment, and size. It is really hard to know just how big a yorkie will be as a puppy.
I know that all children are different when it comes to being around small dogs. And yorkie's are also different when it comes to being around children. That is anther really good idea to find a yorkie who is already am adult, but still younf enough to fit in with a family. Sometimes, a rescue group or a adoptiong group will want to see all your family and observe how everybody responds to the dog before adopting out .
Good luck in your search , try to find reputable breeders in your area. Sometimes a breeder looks for anther home after the yorkie is done breeding, then the yorkie is spayed , and ready to be adopted.

I have seen Yorkies that need to be rescued several times at Petsmart & Petco. My nephew & his family adopted a Yorkie from the dog pound. It is a larger Yorkie & is a great dog that does well with his 6 yr old son. Just as long as you are able to spend some time with it and make sure it enjoys children & is up to a busy family lifestyle.

As with many situations, it depends on the individual kids.

I got my first yorkie puppy when my kids were 3 & 5 years old. They loved growing up with a tiny dog. That yorkie has since passed away and both the kids are now in college. They bought me a new yorkie puppy in January. My son was just home on spring break last week and the 6'3" hockey playing tough guy spent most of his free time snuggling with the new pup...he still loves tiny dogs :D
