single litter question! Hello! Since there seems to be someone in every thread who has wonderful, wise answers, I thought I'd ask another couple of questions! :D I have the "blue born" pup...(for those of you that have read that thread). If you havent, he was the only pup in the "litter" and was grey/tan. He weighed 3.8 oz at birth. He is 2 weeks and 1 day old today and weighs 15.8 oz!!:eek: According to the growth chart, he should be alot lighter! Hes a fat little thing, super spunky! His little eyes finally opened yesterday as well. Im just curious....about a couple of things.....Is he gaining weight so rapidly b/c he is a single littler pup? Also, how is he supposed to learn behaviors like biting, etc from his littermates if there are none?? I know these questions may seem silly, but I am trying to learn as much as possible!! Thanks in advance! :p |
He is chubby because hes a singleton and getting all of moms milk. I went through this with a singleton kitten. Anyway his weight will equal out later when hes more active. He will learn things like bite inhibition from his momma. |
I've always wondered if there are any differences between a single litter pup and those of multiples. My Yorkie Heidi (now 2 yrs old) is a single litter pup. She is very smart and strong willed where the previous yorkie I had for many years was layed back & happy-go-lucky kind of personality. I didn't know if maybe there can be a difference being a single birth, or just her particular personality. |
One of my husband's beagles had a single pup litter once. She had enough milk for 6 pups probably so he was one FAT pup! Lol. But other than that, I think he did fine. They learn a lot from the mom. |
He is a singleton...and is getting all that milk. I wouldn't worry at all...and he will lose that weight once mom starts weaning him...My Bailey was a singleton girl...my breeder and I call her a porky yorkie...LOL..she was off the charts as well....she lived 15 yrs and was only 5 lbs. And he will learn all he needs to know from Mom but he must stay with her for 12 weeks or more :) |

I was wondering about that. We have the mom at our house currently to keep close watch over the pup. Would he need to stay with her that long if we have another yorkie? Could our other yorkie "teach" him behaviors after 8 weeks or so? I just know the mommas owners probably dont want her gone for 12 weeks, and I sure dont want to send the pair back over there, but I will do whatever is best for Mac. :confused: |

yes, it does need to be the MOM who teaches. at least most of the time.. even though the owner doesn't probably want her to be gone that long, maybe you can work something out so the baby can go home with the mom for a while.. maybe alternate days even. it is VERY important that they stay with Mom long enough to learn the proper behaviours. yes, some breeders let them go early, but then we hear on this forum all the time "I got my puppy at 6 week, or 8 weeks and how can I stop it from biting?" Having said that.. I have one that the grandma is actually the one who took over teaching. When Mom decided she was done.. she was done and was happy to let grandma take over.. of course now him and grandma are inseperable |
