Yes, she's "fixed"
 

Yesterday one of my neighbors who lives around the corner was outside waiting on us when I took the pups for their walk. He had a beautiful, sixteen month old, male Yorkie that he had gotten over the week-end. They came across the street to see us and the second thing out of his mouth was "Is she fixed" (I prefer the word spayed), referring to Miss Maggie. He apparently is eager to breed the little guy as he is not "fixed". I told him that even if Maggie were not "fixed" for whatever reason, she would not be bred. He didn't understand about health issues or any of the other risks that go along with BYB, not to mention all of the dogs that are in shelters and foster care who need a home. I don't think I got through to him that he should get his little dog neutered and be happy. I wish I could have been more persuasive.

Geez, the neighbor seems a bit like a pimp, waiting on you with his intact male in search of a female to stud him out to. Did he explain why he wanted to breed his male? I would grab some literature from the vet about the benefits of neutering and the hazards of not doing so and hand it to him the next time you see him on your walk.

Get him to join Yorkie Talk... we will educate him:D

Many times people may not 'hear' your words, but they will go home and think about what you said, esp if they hear the same thing from someone else. I call it 'planting a seed'. Don't be discouraged and do keep trying to change people's opinions on the subject. I'd print out a couple pages of Petfinder or a couple different Yorkie rescues and 'show' him all the Yorkies currently needing homes and hand that to him.

I had someone come into my office complaining about watching their friends yorkie. He said that the young male pup would hump everything in sight, pee everywhere, take off running the second he got a chance, and would even try to start fights with bigger dogs. In addition was crazy hyper and would jump all over anyone he saw. He then went off on a tangent about how he couldn't believe his friend would even pay for a "stupid little dog" anyway, and when I mentioned I also had a yorkie he tried to play it off. Then he started asking about Rizzo and I said he was the exact opposite of the dog he was watching because he was trained starting as a puppy and has been neutered. Apparently the owners of the dog he was watching "paid a lot of money and plan to breed him to get their moneys worth" which is why he isn't neutered. I told him that the dog's owners were crazy and they should neuter him, but I doubt he passed on the message. I just feel bad for the pup, what if he does get out and starts a fight with a big dog :( I strongly dislike greedy people, and try to educate when I can, but you can't force knowledge on people.
I think you handled the situation as best as you could, he probably just thought you were nutso for "fixing" her.

One of my mom's neighbors was like that every time she would see me with Rhett. Never mind the fact that her girl was only 3 pounds and Rhett was 8 at the time. After several exasperating encounters, I finally told her that her bitch wasn't good enough for my boy. Snarky? Yes. But she never asked again.

Sadly, if he keeps "pimping" his male, I'm sure he'll find a willing owner eventually.

Have pen and paper with you at all times. If you see him again, ask him for his email addy so you can send him some information on the pros and cons of spay & neuter. If you know where he lives, then mail him the info.

Why is it the FIRST thing folks want to do it breed their dogs? Is that why they buy them? To get their return back??

If all goes well corky is getting a neuter 4/6, no delays.

Not Me! I got my puppies to love and spoil. I never had any intention of mating my dogs. Although I have to admit I kind of wondered what would have happened if my Shorkie who is shih tzu and yorkie, would have mated with Oliver who is all shih tzu. Then I would have had a shorkie that is 3/4 shih tzu and 1/4 yorkie. Well the thought went out of my head because number 1 Zoe is spayed since she was 7 months old, she is now 15 1/2 months old and Oliver my shih tzu is only 4 1/2 months old. Anyway it was just a passing thought, like what if, kind of thing!

I think it passes through every owner's head at some point. We love our dogs blindly and think they are beyond perfect and would make the breed so much better if there were only more just like them.

Fortunately, for most of us, that thought passes quickly.

I would have asked you that a few months ago, because I knew nothing about breeding and assumed that most YT owners breed or stud, since around here they are seldom seen. I would have meant well and just been honestly curious, not meaning at all to insult you. :)

As a soon-to-be new mom to my own YT baby, I now know better, though I might still ask a fellow yorkie parent just out of curiosity. I will absolutely be getting Whitney spayed as soon as she is of age. Makes me really nervous to think about having to leave her at the vet and her having surgery, but I have no plans to breed her, so why would I allow her to go through a heat and risk another dog getting to her, no matter how small the odds?

Luckily for me, I don't personally know one single person who owns a yorkie, so I'm sure I wont have any pimps hovering around my princess that I will have to educate. :p I'd have to give that neighboor a what-for if he mentioned anything about it again. Some people really just don't understand it. I pledge to be there to inform. ;)
