Are Buzzards a danger to yorkies? Went to the neighborhood store only a few blocks from my home & saw a buzzard circling above. It's actually the 2nd time this week I saw one nearby. Does anyone know if they attack live animals, or just dead ones like you see in the movies...lol. Been reading the threads about birds of prey these days & in the heart of Cincinnati, this isn't a common sight. I am always listening for owls, etc, but seeing such a large bird gave me a bit of a scare. My smallest yorkie is 5.8 lbs, but I still think she is small. Any thoughts? |
I wonder too as I have had the ugly turkey buzzards circle my yard when the pups were out. I herd them back inside and don't take any chances. There were pictures of a hawk that took off with a dachshund on the news a couple of years ago and that was enough to scare me with any birds of prey! The Turkey Vulture Society this says they will not eat live animals and are not a danger to pets or children. Pesky Black Buzzards This says this type of buzzard will attack live animals. Since I am not that good at deciding which bird I might be looking at inflight, I think I will continue being afraid of them all. |
I think they are just scavengers but am not sure if they attack. You could Google them and find out. I'll bet that's a charming site - a buzzard flying overhead. Makes a chill run down your spine, doesn't it? |
I always worry after snow and cold weather when their natural diet may be scarce. I wouldn't put it past a hungry vulture to try and eat something alive. Starvation can make one act out of character.... |
They are scavengers...but they will in fact attack an animal still alive or small enough...be worry. Noted everywhere you read about them it says..."they rarely kill their prey" the word rarely stuck with me as a big YES THEY KILL STUFF...then I watch a video of a calf getting attacked by them...I wouldn't take on a calf... |
It must have been the turkey buzzard. I could see the red on it's head. But scary anyways. I will be watching closer now, if that's even possible. With the kids in the neighborhood, I'm always watching from the door, or outside sitting with them. Guess I'll just be worrying more:( |

For those who have not had the displeasure of seeing a turkey vulture, it has a red head like a turkey. |

A buzzard (don't know what kind) went after Ally when she was younger. I had her in her puppy pen outside and was washing off the deck. I had to spray it with water to get it away. It perched on the puppy pen! I would say she was about 2lbs at the time. We have hawks and owls also, but only the buzzards have gone after her. She is now 2 years at 3lbs 2oz and Tia is 1 year at 5lbs 9oz. I never leave them alone in the yard. I see these things circling all the time. She wanted to chase a huge hawk that flew in our yard last week, but I wouldn't let her outside! She barked forever.... After telling this to my vet, he said he wasn't sure of how big/small our puppies have to be before they stop preying on them. |
This frightens the heck out of me! We know of some people that had their little chihuahua taken off a sand bar they were at on the river. The children and the mother saw it happen!! I can't tell you how many times we have been out on the river with my yorkies running around (until this happened). I have always let my dogs run around in our fenced yard in town (ND) and have never thought a thing about this. NOW, we are going to be retiring down in NW Ark. The house we just bought is on a hill with woods, overlooking a golf course. I had my fenced yard all planned out where I would put it and I met a neighbor that warned me that there are eagles, owls, halks, and cyotes!!!!!!!!!! Now I am looking at a kennel, with a cover over the top!! It will be so different for my dogs not having the run of a yard but I will NOT take chances. I guess either they will be in the kennel or leashed with me on a walk. What do all of you do? |
In Kansas, we have all kinds of prey birds. Having been raised on a farm/ranch with all kinds of animals and livestock, I can say we never had problems with buzzards. Here, prey is plentiful and they prey on the sick, weak, vulnerable, and injured. It would be rare and unheard of for a buzzard to attack a small dog especially in a yard, as they work together in groups and eat their prey on the ground, they don't carry it off. However, hawks, owls and eagles all hunt by themselves and will carry off their prey and our little dogs are perfect sizes for them. We've lost more cats/kittens to hawks, owls, cyotes, but never buzzards. Always better to be safe however. Not worth taking any chances with any of them. |

One says to the other: "Patience my ass... I'm gonna KILL something!" |

I freak out if little birds are around. My mom has a friend who's small dog was stolen by a large bird... So, I don't play with any birds. We go outside with our yorkies and stay close while they are out there. Better safe than sorry.. |
