when did you start taking your pup outside for potty> I have a 12 wk female. Adopted her at 10 wks..my Vet said to use wee-pads inside until she's 16wks and done with shots? |
I started right at 9 weeks old with outdoor training. I was told by my vet that as long as it was just my yard, that would be fine. No public parks, dog parks, pet stores, etc though. I wanted outdoor training to be clear from the get-go. |
Same as Britster |
Same as Britster and Chachi...Apple was 11 1/2 weeks old, when I brought her home, and I took her right out to the backyard...Waited 'till she was 4 months old, to walk her outside of our yard... |
Logan was 12 weeks when i got him and from day one i have been taking him outside! i have been persistantly doing so for the 2 weeks i have owned him and he is doing soooo well! I think ur baby will be ok if u let him/her relieve himself/herself outside! Logan hates puppy pads and just tears them up! lol:D |
Just our yard at 8 weeks when we brought her home. |
We started doing it at around five months. We waited until Sophie had all of her shots (our next door neighbors don't seem to take the best care of their dogs and I didn't want to risk it). Plus, we got her in December and it's been snowy and cold and she's only 3.2 lbs at 5 months, so we didn't even have clothes or a harness to fit her for the first few months! It took about a week and a visit with friends who had dogs for her to "get" going outside. We're still in the process of housetraining. I only leave her a pad at night, which she uses from time to time. Otherwise, if we're gone for 3-5 hours she's in her pen without a pad and then we take her out when we get home. She loves walking around the neighborhood now and it's a nice way to get some exercise and get some of her energy out :) |
i had the dilemma that i live in a pet friendly apartment complex with 400 units and most of them with one to two dogs. i was a paranoid freak about her getting sick! so i tried the puppy pads which were not successful til almost a year later. but she caught on very quickly outside to pee, however she still poops in the house...usually in the bathroom. |
I vote the day you get them...assuming you get them at a safe age like 12 weeks not sure myself 10 weeks would make that much of a difference as potty training with a breeder should start then...but if you have a potty area outdoors-other animals might have been there or are there- that risks her health I'd go with what you vet says, and because its always better to be on the side of caution (IMO). My Scoobers ate the plastic cotton ones you buy at stores...there's a few people on here who make washable ones that seem so much better and less likely to be eaten if that becomes an issue for you too, some people use a grid system which is liek the new potty patch-wish I had that, I started Scoobers on litter training... but if you plan on out door training later hmmmmmmmm a box with sod (you can get it at any garden center) in it may serve the correct purpose for you... |
