Anyone gotten their dog to tolerate a topknot? 1 Attachment(s) We just adopted a two year old boy. He's obviously been groomed in the past, and was very tolerant when I gave him a bath and dried his hair. His bangs are long, but rather than have them cut short again, I'd love to let them grow out and put his hair in a topknot. But when I tred, he immediately rubbed it off. I tried again, same result. Any advice on how to get him to tolerate a topkot? Are there any particular types of rubber bands that stay in better than others? |
My last yorkie, that I had for 11 years, always wore a topknot. She grew to love having a bath and getting her hair done, because we all made such a big deal about telling her how pretty she was and she'd strut around obviously feeling very proud of herself. I used the little bands that kids use when they have braces. They were tiny & worked great :D My new pup's hair isn't yet long enough for a topknot. I'd just keep putting the topknot back him & praising him & telling him how handsome he looks. Make sure it is not too tight or pulling his eyes. |
I would love to try a topknot but never had the patience to not cut those bangs when they get so long. Do you just have to let them hang until they are long enough to catch in the rubberband? |
I have a small barret that we are using for Bentley's bangs right now. We are trying to get through this horrible phase. He is leaving it in longer than he originally was but still doesn't make it a full day. That's ok. He comes back over and lets me adjust it when it gets it too loose. So, I guess I will just keep trying to be patient :) |
This site has some great tips on how to put a topknot in and at the bottom of the page, you'll see advice on how to get your dog use to wearing a topknot. Just start with a band, and put it lower on the forehead to catch those short hairs, some people just use a mini clip at first. Yes! and the first few months of topknots look a lil dorky, cos they are kinda forward on the head & look like a lil fountain :D Once my last pup was used to them, she preferred having her hair out of her eyes than hanging in front of them & dipping in her water bowl. She was supersmart though...she'd go to her basket where I kept hair supplies & bark, if her topknot fell out. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this new puppy turns out the same way. |

Thanks for the site and info. Might get brave enough to start trying. Think the look is so "Yorkie". |
I just asked hubby could I put a topknot in corky's hair??? He just gave him a look and told me "If you want to do that, then get a girl dog"..... Al right He told me to do it!!! |
LOL! Good luck with your new baby! :) :) :) And buy bows and ribbons, too, for that girl's topknot! |
My Jewels is 5 and she will still try to rub them out of her hair. I dont put one in often though |

Lily doesn't really like topknots. I started putting them in just before going outside so that she will be distracted and forget that its there. I use the silicone bands because they don't tend to pull the hair like the rubber ones in the event that she pulls it out herself. I put bows in when we go out, or if I know I can keep an eye on her at home. We had an incident when she got a barrette out and swallowed it...got her a trip to the vet with xrays & induced vomiting. She still hates when I put it in, I need my daughter to help me usually. She's getting a little more used to it. |
With Silver we just kept putting them in when she rubbed them out and giving her a treat right after we get it up and now she knows when she's good and lets us put it up and keeps it in, she gets a treat. |
I use bands that come from the tack shop that are designed for horses, I find they do not come out easily, and they also don't rip the hair out when you take the bands out... they also come in different colors, I buy the black ones. Also I was wondering, how long do you leave a top knot in? Can you leave it in for a few days if it's up well? Harley doesn't like me fussing with his hair, but he leaves it alone once I get it in. |
