Big Dogs Living With Little Dogs We have an 85 lb. Lab and our 6 lb. Yorkie. Every time I let Jackson around my Lab, who is a gentle giant and 11 yrs. old, he wants to play. He stands on his tippy toes to reach his face and my Lab seems to tolerate him, except then he wants to really play and he takes one of his massive paws and swats him. I have quick reflexes and have averted many a disaster. But I have seen photos of Labs and Yorkies napping together and such, and I can't even let mine in the same room on the floor for more than 10 seconds. My yorkie runs around our bathroom, which is 400 sq. feet- so it's plenty big,but that is the only room he is allowed to run around freely for his own safety! My lab is allowed anywhere, except that bathroom. Any advice? :animal-sm |
This is a tough one. Your Lab is so much bigger and even just a slight swap of the paw could be pretty strong feeling for your Yorkie. I'm thinking that with supervision (very close of course) you can watch your Lab and Yorkie together and Jackson might learn to "duck or move quickly" and "respect" your Lab being bigger and stronger. Dogs are pretty smart, Im guessing that your Lab can sense that Jackson is smaller and in his own way trys to be gentle. And I bet Jackson will learn to know when it's time to get out of the Labs way. I've never dealt with this kinda situation but keep us posted on how it is working out later. :p |
I'd have to aggree with what Shatzie said and dogs to learn to adapt to each other over time but you still have to be carefull. A 400 sq foot bathroom :eek: I'm jelous I have to leave mine just to dry myself off :). |
When we first saw our house 2 years ago, we thought it was ludicrous to have such a big bathroom, but it worked out well for Jackson! :animal-sm |
Give It Time Yes, your two can play together just fine. Bouncer's 4 best friends are a golden retriever, great dane/lab mix, pit pull, and a 26 lb. mutt. And they all play just fine with him. I can even leave him alone with all 4 of them and come back an hour later and he's fine and dandy. Just give them some supervised play time and be sure to let your lab know what isn't acceptable when he does something he shouldn't and do this with your little baby as well. Soon enough you'll have no worries. :) |
How? How old is your Yorkie? How much does he weigh? Neither of my dogs seems to realize their own size! |
Our Lab is so gentle with Gracie! She is about 75 lbs. versus Gracie's 1 1/2 lbs.! Tilda plays with her, and I've never seen her get rough. It's like she knows that Gracie is tiny and fragile (although Grace thinks she's as big as Tilda is!) and she is very careful. |
Big dogs little dogs My youngest daughter has a lab that is 85 pounds my boys are 6 and 7 pounds each. We went to her house for Thanksgiving and her FSIL brought her 65 pound springer spaniel. We put them all together in the back yard. This was before the boys were fixed, It was hysterical to watch my 6 pound yorkie try to mount the 65 pound female. They played together really well, at one point the lab got a little too rough with my lilttle 6 pound fellow and he hopped up on the lawn chair so that he was nose-to-nose with the 85 pound lab and tried to tear into him. They really have a big dog attitude! |

we have a lab of almost 6 months and Chelsey our yorkiebaby of 12 weeks and i have to honestly say that Dounia our lab is sooooooooo gentle with her, we call her "motherhen" she loves Chelsey almost too much, Chelsey can do everything with her including hang in her ears, i do keep a close eye on them while they play coz u never know, i treat them equally and never give the one without giving the other one, they need different attention, the lab loves to train and learn, Chelsey likes to be picked up and cuddled, before we got Chelsey we were a bit worried coz Dounia is still so young with a lot to learn but all worked out much much better then we ever expected, the times that Dounia is a bit too bouncy for Chelsey i turn on the TV for Dounia, she loves to watch animal planet or cartoons... it looks crazy to see a dog watch TV but its one way of getting her calm lol Mandy |
