Dry Skin - help! Our 4 yr old Yorkie has always had skin problems during the winter months. The vet thought it was allergies at first so she put Aria on allergy medication - didn't work. Then she ordered all sorts of skin shampoos, creams and meds. We even changed her dog food - nothing has worked She is constantly scratching herself. Does anyone else have this problem? Appreciate your feedback. Peg |
I was going to ask about this myself. My Max scratches himself periodically throughout the day and it is a bit irritating since I know he has no fleas on him. I look at his skin and it doesn't look like it is dried out. I did start using Grizzly Salmon Oil to add to his food as I heard many people on here do the same (salmon oil that is). I also bought an all natural oatmeal and aloe shampoo made by EarthBath which I have yet to try out (this week is his bath). I am hoping these things help out. |
Coconut oil works great too. Crickett thinks she is getting a treat, and we notice a difference in her skin and fur in just a couple of days. |
Give flax seed oil, use a very mild shampoo and dilute it down as well, and use a good conditioner. Very important too is to use a humidifier. Keep the air in the house at 50 to 55%. Stop feeding commercial dog food and just use red meat mixed with fresh veggies. |
I applied fish oil to her food and oatmill bathes also - neither worked. Another post said to give her flaxseed and stay away from commercial food. I may give that a try. |
I haven't tried flaxseed oil - worth a try. Why should I stay away from commercial foods? Our vet is so against "human food" but she never explained why. |

I am having the same problem with Jackie and Sadie. They will be 4 in April and this is the first winter with this problem. All of mine had bad itching a few months back and they all 6 had a vet visit. The vet said they had no fleas, Maybe mites or dry skin. so try oatmeal bathes, conditioners. and fish oil on there food. I did that. They all were put on Revolution. Every one got better but Sadie and Jackie. I changed there food. They are still itching. I am going to buy a few good dog cook books and start cooking for them. I hope it passes soon. My poor babies. What veggies are good? They like carrots and sweet potatoes, tonight they had a little boiled cabbage and sweet potatoes. For there dinner and Breakfast they had boiled noodles with boiled ground chicken. They have been eating blue buffalo. |
