Soft Poop Issue I have had Max for only 2 weeks now and when I got him from the foster home (pet rescue), she said his only issue was some diarrhea and soft stool. He is 10 months old. He was on some medication which I had to complete for about a 7 day period. I did that and the stool is better overall but still has some bad ones from time to time. Almost to the point of diarrhea consistency. He just got neutered 3 weeks ago. I changed his dog food from Great Life to Blue Bufalo over a 5 day period (last Thursday was his last day of switching over). I do give him dental chews (but the healthy digestible ones - Zuke's Z-Ridge, carrot version) and some Chicken wrapped Yam treats. Raw carrots are the only human food I give him as snacks (and just a little of that). Absolutely nothing else. I did just start using Grizzly Salmon Oil once per day in his food as well since about 2 days ago. He's only had 1 really good hard stool. The rest have either been ok or soft or runny. It's not diarrhea in the sense that he has uncontrollable bowel movements. He always goes on schedule outside. It's just that it's really really soft sometimes. All his fecal tests came back ok. The medications were for helping to harden his stool. I heard adding raw canned pumpkin to his diet is a good solution to hardening the stool. Just wondering what others have had to resort to with their Yorkies. Thanks in advance for replying. |
Sorry to hear your new pup is going through this. You might try reposting under the health and diet for more responses. Our Ivan had this problem for most of the first year and a half that we had him. We tried various digestive supplements that are good for this problem. We also switched foods several times over the months, thinking it was food allergies. The only thing that finally helped him was a switch to a raw diet. He's been doing great ever since (about 6 months now). If you've had your vet check him already and the fecals are all fine, I would ask your vet about tying a probiotic digestive enzyme and a little bit of pumpkin to see if that helps. Be sure you get the plain pumpkin without anything added. |
Mocha had horrible gas and soft stool while on BlueB. I was told he'll get better so I continued for 3bags before switching to Orijen. BB is great food but not for every dog. I Google it and many had gas and diarrhea. I also give him dog probiotics and helped a lot. |

His poops have been pretty good the last 3 times out, so I am holding out hope that the new food is better for him and his digestive system is settling in with the Blue Buffalo. I am still going to get him the pumpkin for a midday treat and see if that also helps out. |

The problem is I don't know what the consistency of a Yorkie's poop is supposed to be like. Maybe what he is excreting most of the time is fairly normal. With comparing to my cocker that I had, I would consider it "soft". |
After a week of being totally switched over to his Blue Buffalo Wilderness Dry Food, his poop is what I would consider normal now. I did get him a can of pumpkin fruitables today and gave him about 2 oz. of it and he absolutely loved it. Will use that as his midday treat. |
i hope max gets well soon! i know its uncomfortable for humans to get diarrhea so it must be the same for dogs as well. I have stomach problems from eating something that doesn't agree with my stomach. Wonder if something is not agreeing with max. like others have said, i think i would cut down on treats & human food until his stomach settles :) perhaps ask the vet to see if he possibily have food allergies. The sad thing to dogs having food allergies is that they can't eat treats. Mickey has allergies/sensitive stomach and any treats we'd give him as a pup he'd get sick. now he doesn't eat treats even if you give him a small piece. |
Thanks jennzy, but all is well with Max. It was simply a waiting period for the changeover in his food that was causing the issue. I assume the previous food (Great Life) that he was being fed wasn't agreeing with him (the pet rescue place only had him for 2 weeks before I got him and I assume he wasn't transitioned over properly to the food she was feeding him and it caused him soft poop issues). |
