Some peeps just don't know how to react to such a beautiful dog!!!.... I, too, don't understand why the lady would be so offended cause you called the "she a he". Many times when I am carrying Seymour in public, people will call him a "she"...... I always smile and say.... He is so pretty he DOES look like a girl, but his name is Seymour. ;) |
some people are rude without realizing it, and some people are RUDE period, just soldier on....Poppy is growing into a beautiful yorkie, just keep soldiering on and try not to let impolite people get the best of you!!;) |
Those handful of people who were so rude, seemed like they were very ignorant. People open their mouths before thinking all the time. That is why personally I like dogs better ;) I would try to find a better social network of dog people . I would have had my feelings hurt too. you handeled it well though. I think it was really because those people were uneducated and made quick assumptions about your sweet little Poppy. |
Natasha some people just don't understand how we feel about our little ones, don't let them get under your skin. Since I am from India and its not too common to have dogs amongst our friend circle i get funny comments/looks from friends all the time. I have gotten over it now and now i don't expect anyone to understand how i feel for my "first born"!!! |
Why ask how much you paid for the puppy? then offer your 2 cents on how much you paid? For the "Rat lady" My response would be, you must have a house full of them! The Pit, Do not get mad, You felt he may not be in control of his dog, and you have the right to protect yours. If you get offended because ANOTHER person call your very cute female yorkie a boy, perhaps you get a pink bow, and if you do not want to do that; then get tougher skin and suck it up! |
You encountered a few people jealous of how cute your pup is at a carboot sale and you kept it together & didn't lose it (other than here amongst friends :)). Awesome job keeping your composure!!! As for how to respond to rudeness, the best thing you can do is ignore them. Engaging them is like wrestling with pigs. Everybody gets dirty, and the pigs like it! I love this! And need to remember it myself, cos I know in that situation, my reaction would have been a helluva lot different  |
So sorry you had a bad day, I have turn into these crazy people before too, I just shrug it off because they don't understand the love of a yorkie! People call my boy a girl all the time, I jus take it as a sign of how gorgeous he is! Lol |
You did all the right things, so don't let the idiots upset you. You do not owe anyone an explanation either. ;) |
I am also sorry you had a bad day. I also have a hard time when people refer to Taycie as a "rat" dog. I know know what rats look like, I have seen them many times at Petsmart or Petco and I just don't see the comparison but maybe I am the blind one? I had a particular situation with a lady who I actually worked with at a Salon in Downtown Denver,CO. It was a big salon that did well and I worked with 45 stylists at the time. One girl I worked with told me to my face," Emily, You are pretty. You have a really nice face. But You would be even prettier if you had a different nose." To say the least I was shocked and went to the bathroom and cried... Although this is a different situation it really is shocking what people will say... I do think your little Poppy is gorgeous and I am sure she a joy in your life:) |
Good advice from all & a great line to qote from AKYorkie! I figued out that people who say such unkind things like calling our babies rats or acting offended when you are protective or reject an offer to buy them, are all very unenlightened. They must never have really bonded with a pet or known the unconditional love a pup like our yorkies give. If they had -- they would never say or act the way they do. So next time you are faced with someone as crass as the ones you described, jusy pity them and walk away quickly. I can laugh off a single "rat" razz but after encountering several rude people all in one day, I think I would have been ready to blow up. I stpped telling people how much I paud for mine as they all seemed to be setting me up to ridicule. So, now if asked I just say "less than she is worth to me." If someone seems to be really interested I might tell them after getting to know them but no more answers just so people can ridicule -- they have no idea just what these little ones can add to our lives! What is a carbooty? I looked it up but am still confused. The Urban dictionary said it was female equivalent to scrubs and then something about being without motorized transpotation. And what does OH stand for? Is it same as DH? I know they aren't important to understanding your hurtful day, but I like to learn new things. tks |

This woman was also holding a yorkie bigger than poppy and she came over to say hello and so they can meet. Poppy didnt like going near the other dog and was backing away so i asked if i could stroke her dog and asked his name and she told me off telling me HER dog was a SHE called Gorgina and she gets the hair cut short because dogs so small SHOULDNT have long hair because it gets knotted and that she took her dog to the groomers to get the hair cut!! :(I didnt mean to offend her i just asumed it was a little boy because it had a blue collar on not because the hair was short. I told her i also take poppy to the groomers and that i brush her twise a day to keep her knott free. Should i really have needed to explain myself to her? A little further on a chinese woman came running up to me and she didnt speak very good english asking me where i got my puppy from. I laughed telling her she was over 9months old now and that i got her from an advert out of a paper but that was not recommended and she should find a breeder. She asked how much i payed for her which i thought was REALLY rude but i felt like i had to answer and when i said £500 she was like OHhh i would never pay that much for a puppy. How dare she tell me how much i should have paid for Poppy. My Poppy is priceless :( hurt my feelings. So off we went again walking around the boot sale and this woman pointed at Poppy laughing and shouted ''OMG ITS A RAT'' she was really laughing and even her husband turned and said ''dont call her dog that''. People was looking and i was really hurt and upset. I kissed Poppys head and told her that the woman was probs jealous! Even my OH was shocked and angry. We just walked off :( It's almost a tradition to call a Yorkie a "rat dog" --- the were ratters...and they're little (some the size of a rat!) Most people aren't being mean. One of my friends will call me and ask, "how's the rats?" It's now a running joke with us. When Gracie had her pups she was one of the first one's I sent pictures to -- email titled: Baby Rats!!! (they did in fact look like baby rats!!! lol) However, there is a difference between a friend saying that to someone and a total stranger. Then i was waiting for OH to get something and this man came up and asked how much to buy Poppy???!!! I told him she was priceless and he looked at me strange and walked off. She may be priceless to you, but not to him. So in the future I would just say "she isn't for sale, thanks for asking," --- take his asking as a compliment. THEN i we was outside and Poppy was on the floor and this big dog came over and i picked Poppy up as i was scared. It was a pitbull or something like that and the man mummbled something like he was angry at me for picking Poppy up. The dog was pulling towards Poppy like it wanted to eat her, it wasnt a happy hello pull so i dunno why he was so upset. I didnt mean to hurt his feelings but i needed to protect my baby, right? Yes you need to protect your baby, I would just tell the person, these little dogs think they're bigger than they are and they might start something with his dog (which we know his dog would finish it), so it was for the best for both of them Is it just me over reacting but i feel really hurt and like i subjected Poppy to all this today. I think she loved alot of the attention tho even if some was negitive. Where do people get off being so rude about my little baby girl. Its likes me going up to a mother and calling her child a name its not right and its defo not ok.... well thats how i feel. What do u lot think? I think you were a little sensitive on some points. Do you really care what these total strangers think? Ask yourself if any one of these people are worth more than 30 seconds of your time to reflect on their comments. But you are right some are probably jealous. And some people are just rude. The lady with the boy Yorkie seemed to be as sensitive as you. Some people don't appreciate little dogs:eek: - so those people definitely aren't worth your time!!! |
Taking a Yorkie anywhere with you is going to attract lots of attention--some good and some bad. That is the nature of people, and it is unrealistic to think that you will ONLY hear positive comments, no matter how adorable your beloved dog is. So, tell us about some of the positive experiences and encounters you had that day. I'm sure there were many; so I'd just focus on those and let the others go. Not everybody loves dogs as much as you and the rest of the YT members. Also, sadly strangers don't treat us as kindly as friends. I wish they'd stick to the old "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" moto. |
