Do you groom or take your YT to the groomers? Minnie has never been to the groomers yet. I have always brushed her hair and combed any knots that are in it. She is getting better to where she is not associating grooming with play or biting (think she is teething). She is 6 months old and should be getting her permanent teeth in. I only plan to take her to the vet to have her trimmed up around her nails and maybe a little around the eyes. Minnie also likes baths just hates when the water is running and is perfectly fine when the water is off and you wash her, also how often do you bathe your YT? |
I take mine to the groomer every 8 weeks, I do upkeep in between. I wish they could go a little more often but it is 100 each time I go and that gets expensive. I bathe them at home every two weeks, I do one bathe each week alternating which one gets done. |
I took Bella to the groomers once, I do my own grooming at home. I was not overly happy with the job the groomer did, so figured I would learn how to do it myself, and I did. Now I only have myself to blame. (I will probably take my dogs to the groomer maybe every 6 months or so, Bella won't let me clean her tears or trim her nose.) |
I take Levi to the groomer. I do his baths and brush his teeth at home and will trim any stray hairs. He goes to Petsmart/Petco when he needs a nail trim, and he goes to his actual groomer whenever he needs a legitimate haircut. |
My boys have never been to the groomers, I do it myself :) |
Peyton goes to the groomers. She has been to Petco once and they did an ok job, but i found an excellent groomer that i am so happy with, much better than Petco, she does everything including nails and ears and feet and trim and bathe and only charges 35 dollars. :) Peyton is going to get groomed this wednesday, cant wait! |
Jackson has a mobile groomer come to our house every 8-12 weeks depending. Winter I usually let it go about 12 weeks. Spring and Summer is every 8 weeks or so. I keep him short and I LOVE my groomer! |
I used to take my dogs to the groomers but I hate having to leave them there all day and how the groomers don't always listen to what I want. I now do all the grooming myself. It cost me probably about $300 to get the good grooming clippers, several blades, shears, brushes etc but I've saved that amount over again by doing it myself instead of paying the groomers. It just takes time to learn the best way to do it. There are now videos you can watch free or buy or you can learn by trial and error - like I did. Hair always grows back!! :D Teresa |
Fiona will be 3 years old the end of this month, and has NEVER been to a groomer! I do it all myself! I used to work as a grooming assistant to a wonderful groomer , and she is the only person I would ever trust to leave my dog with! I know that Petsmart offers grooming, but I dont trust them what so ever! I think Fiona looks pretty good, if I don't say so myself! :D |
I take Kaji every 6-8 months. Actually she comes to me as she's a mobile groomer as well. I bathe him every Sunday, and I give him hair cuts in between trips to the groomer. I do end up taking him in because his face loses shape by 6 months. He goes to see the groomer, and I try to keep it up for another 6-8 months. |

Is it hard to groom them? I plan on keeping Max's hair relatively short. I just don't know how the clippers will do on fine hair. |
I have some $40 clippers that are really good. Is it hard to groom them? I plan on keeping Max's hair relatively short. I just don't know how the clippers will do on fine hair. |
I don't bring the girls to a groomer...I have heard too many horror stories from...hacked hair cuts to death of the animal...I am not a groomer but, I groom them myself. Sadie doesn't have a very nice coat so keeping her a little shorter makes her coat look nice (I use a 1 1/4 in clipper guide) Lillie on the other hand has a gorgeous coat! However...she matts very easily and I find it easier to keep her coat shorter as well...Sadie doesn't mind the clipping.,..Lillie HATES IT! It takes me 2 days (literally) to finish her,,,she is only 5 pounds and doesn't hold still,,she is really frightened...not of the sound...just the clipping,,I also have to use scissors on her to finish her up...she is ok with the scissors. |
4 Attachment(s) I groom my two myself...I tried to get a mobile groomer once, but their waiting list was 2 months out so I studied a few pictures on YT and do them myself. Bijou's cut was the hardest but it didn't turn out too bad the first time. I'll share pictures of them in their baths and after. This is Bijou: Attachment 339534 Attachment 339535 This is Barley: Attachment 339536 Attachment 339537 I know they are no where near show quality perfect cuts, but at least I know they were loved and safe during the bathing and grooming process. Let us know what you end up doing...we love pictures you know!!!! |
I brought Darwin to the groomers once to shave his ears so they would stand up. We were there for almost two hours and she tried to charge us only $10 for her time. I gave her $20 but I also decided to do the grooming at home - nope, I'm not that great at it but both Darwin and Mabel will stand nicely for me while I shave or brush them. I always cut my own hair so paying for my dogs just didn't seem fair!!:D |
I've been doing mine for almost 3 years now. The good thing is that the hair keeps growing back. :D:p I try to bathe and trim them every 2 weeks. I might give a quick trim but them I do a really good cut when they get stragley. Hot Rod used to go to the groomers but Maggie May has never been. I still take them to get their names and glands done though. |
Is there some good instructions on here for grooming? I see where someone said 1 1/4 guide. |
Zhoie was 2 yrs in Jan and has never been to a groomers. I trim her myself by trial & error. Yeap, it's only hair, it will grow back. I started her week after we came home at 12 weeks, mostly just turning on the trimmers and letting them rub on her, clipping a few hairs with the scissors and she is not problem at all. For her nails, I wait until shes all relaxed on the couch and snip away. She just looks at me like...not again, LOL. For her glands, when she skoots...she goes to the vet and they charge me $12.00. That way I know she has not been injured in that arear. Good Luck! Be sure to show us pictures. |
Marcie goes to the groomers. She loves her groomer. She cleans her teeth, clips nails, and grooms for $25.00. She only will do Yorkies. |
we take mickey to the groomer... when we were both younger we found a guy who did it from his apartment and mickey would come out looking like a doll but since we moved to north york couldnt find anyone to groom his hair like that and since i was a child at the time i took all the mickey's baby pics and glued them to all my notebooks... oi! my new breeder is also a groomer (multitasker she is..) so i think i will be making the trip to get her to do my coco's grooming :) |
I prefer to groom my own as I don't trust many groomers with my baby's hair. The only time that I would go the other way is if it needs fixing. But even then I would find a decent groomer whom I can trust. A grooming kit for Tessa is in the works, so I'm a do-it-yourself kinda mom to my furbabies. :) |
I groom Suzi myself. She has been to a groomer before a few times, a long time ago. She is very good at letting me take care of her. I just bathed her last night, used a oatmeal shampoo and a condtioner especially made for yorkie's . Then I got her inside a towel , because she was soaking wet. I brushed and combed her hair still being wet, then used a detangler spray on her to help . I just bought a brand new hair dryer that is awesome. It is quiet, small, and can fold up or down. I found this one at walmart , less then $20.00 . Suzi was not at all scared of it , so I was able to really dry her and brush her well. Then i used a special comb , that is thin, and smoothed out her hair. Before bathing her i used a special ear powder to get any hair out of her ears, and then a liquid ear cleaner that goes with it. It was the first time ever cleaning hair out of her ears, and it was so easy wit hthe ear powder. Now, the really difficult dog to groom is my Shih Tzu. She is younger the Suzi , and does not stand , sit well long on the grooming table. Her hair is completely different then a yorkie's. |
I think you did an excellent job :) Quote:

If you haven't had her groomed it all before, do NOT start trimming around the eyes...you'll always be constantly doing it or it will poke them in the eyes. It's best to let it grow out until it naturally falls over their nose and that will keep it out of their eyes the best. I once had a bad grooming job done where they shaved his nose and it has taken a really long time to grow that hair back out. It still sticks up, but it's getting better. Be patient with it through the growing stage and you will be glad you did! Quote:
