car sickness
 

Toby becomes so distressed & anxious when we take him out in the car. He cries, pants & basically hates the ordeal, even vomits at times. We have tried holding him on our lap & travelling in his cage in the back seat but he just does not like the car at any cost. We have tried the spray from the vets which is supposed to calm him down but to no avail!! No effect on Toby!! He is now nearly 2 year old. Do you think he will ever change. Our other previous Yorkies were no trouble at travelling in the car. Open to suggestions! Tobys mum:confused: :animal-pa

How often do you travel with him? I know when Maddie was little, I took her everywhere. Even if I was just running out for a few minutes. I was too chicken to leave her home alone. :) I took Cooper in after she was 4-5 months old and she had trouble adjusting to car rides. We started with short trips to my moms. She eventually got to where she loves to go and only gets nervous when she gets in the car alone, she knows it is either vet or groomer. LOL :)

Our new pup get sick when he rides on curvy or bumpy roads. My dh read somewhere that pups often get sick in the car b/c of something with their inner ears is developing. ?? I am not sure...I can't remember crap. :)

Maybe you can try exposing him to the car little by little? Just walk him up to the car and then away - over and over. Then open the door and away - over and over. Then put him in the car with you and let him jump right out - over and over. Then shut the door for a few seconds, open it and right out - over and over. Take it from there and work up to backing out of the drive, etc., but I've found that this repeated, gradual habituation to the thing they greatly fear gradually desensitizes them. Stay patient, positive and lots of treats and praise. My two fearful dogs(one in the past and one now) have always responded very well to this method and especially my Tibbe as he had a very bad start in life and came to me with many, many awful fears and devils in his life. He's now a very healthy, stable and hardly fearful little beast who tears through life with the gusto of a bull and yet........he can still revert sometimes when it comes to a "new noise" and if at first ignoring his response doesn't work, here we go again for a bit of "over and over". I hope that will work for you but you will likely get many posts about other ways that work just as well. Good luck to you and Toby and let us know how things are going.

This sounds like a great suggestion to try. :thumbup: I forgot to mention I always travel with treats and make sure the girls relate car trips to something good.

Drives aeound the block, 1/4 bonine tablet.....some are, some are not.

This may be an option for you. I would check with your vet to ensure this is an okay option for your Toby.

My aunt's poodle is the same way in the car. Her vet prescribed a mild tranquilizer that she uses for him when they are going on a trip. Good luck with your pup!

We've had great luck with Rescue Remedy (pet).

You can introduce him to the car little by little. Let him just hang out in there with you doors open. Then close the doors and hang til he's comfortable. Then start the car....and so on. Each step might take several short sessions (3-5 minutes per day).
