Is my Yorkie still going to grow?
 
My Yorkie is just 6 months old. Is she full grown now or will she grow more?

I think about 9 months to a year to finish growing.

Thank you. I have her scheduled to be spayed next week, but she's so tiny, only weighs 2.7 pounds. I'm thinking that it might be better to wait a little longer and let her gain some body weight. I'm concerned about anesthesia and developing a collasped trachia from the surgery??? Waiting certainly can't hurt, I would think.

She is on the small side and way too little to breed. If she is not around males and you are able to keep a constant eye on her when she is in heat then I would not worry too much about spaying right now. Do you have males around her? Has she come into heat yet?

She hasn't come into heat yet. We don't have any other pets and we keep a close eye on her. I've seen these Micro Tea Cups, which I think she may be considered. I got her from a breeder that specializes in very small Yorkies. I have a great vet and trust him very much. She had a bad reaction to her vaccination. I'm just concerned about the anesthesia while so tiny. She sure is a cutie! Other than the reaction to the vaccination she's really healthy, energetic, and cuddly!

Sometimes these reactions are from being given to many vaccines at one time
to such a tiny one..I would wait until she is older and maybe grown a bit more before surgery

also she may have retained baby teeth that will need to be removed later and it can all be done at the same time

I would have blood work done before any surgeries

It has been my experience they pretty much are done with structure when they cut their adult teeth. They fill out for the next year. I never, never do more than one shot at a time. All of my dogs are very small and very healthy. Arielle was spayed and had quite a few baby teeth pulled at 2 lbs and had no issues, but the Doctor specializes in small and exotic animals and he has proved to me he knows and is confident in what he is doing. He spays rats for crying out loud! Unbelievable! It is so important with the small ones to really know the doctor has experience with these tiny ones! If my memory serves me correct she was seven months old and had her adult teeth mostly in. I personally like to get them spayed before their first heat and baby teeth pulled before they compromise their bite. Hope this helps.

I would wait a couple of more months. Only because of the teeth issue. Mine had to have quite a lot of teeth pulled at around 7 - 8 months old. You do not want to put them under anesthesia more than you have to. Just as the previous poster said - very, very important that you have blood work done before she gets put under.

"Micro mini teacups" and similar terms are usually considered such in referring to a dog being less than 2 lbs in my experience...I see you are in CA too...apparently they are rather popular here...unfortunately.

I got one of my dogs at what was estimated to be almost 5 months of age, he was less than 10 pounds and wasn't supposed to be over 12...by 10 months he was 17 lbs...he is now 21 fully grown at 2 years. I believe 9 months is the cut off for usually considering a dog fully grown (per my vet) but it depends on the breed too.

:thumbup: Do all three. Blood work is a necessity before surgery.

My Yorkie is 13 months and weighs the same as yours. She stopped growing about 8 to 9 months of age. We spayed her three months ago and the hardest part was leaving her overnight. Recovery was quick as long as the medication kicked in for her.
BUT, you will see her stitches grow out through the skin since they are so tiny and thin, but it will eventually come out.

Bailey stopped growing around 8 to 9 months, he just filled out more after that. I would wait a little to get her spayed and have her teeth removed at the same time. Good luck :)

Mine hit a growth spurt between 9 months and a year. I've read some where (maybe even on YT) that it can take up to two years to reach full adult weight.

But one thing to keep in mind is the risk of certain cancers is higher if not spayed before the first heat.

Bevo didnt hit his growth spurt till after he was a year old. He was tiny tiny tiny, weighing in at less than two pounds. He now weighs a little over 4!! Every baby is different!

I'm not an expert but Zach is 11 months old and weighs 6 1/2 lbs. When I take him for his rabbies shots in two months I will be able to tell if he's finished growing. However we took our shih tzu who is 4 1/2 months to the vet for his second booster and he went from 6 1/2 lbs a couple of weeks ago to 9 lbs. I can't believe he gained almost 3 lbs in less than a month. I have to look into this.

With little ones, you should definitely get the pre-op blood work to make sure her liver will be able to metabolize the anesthesia safely. You can also make sure your vet is experienced with intubating tiny dogs to be sure there is no damage to her trachea during placement of the endotracheal tube (breathing tube) for surgery.

Spaying her before her first heat will greatly reduce her chances of having cancer so I wouldn't wait too long.

Rio was only 2.8 lbs at 8 months when I got her spayed and she did fine (also had her chipped and 4 retained baby teeth pulled).

Bullet was also just 2.7 lbs when he was neutered (and 9 baby teeth pulled) and again he did fine. I did the pre-op blood work for both of them.

My shih tuz is 26 lbs. He was my daughters so I am not sure of his "projected" weight but I did have his litter mate and she was to be 7lbs.. she died at 6 months so I will never know. Bailey on the other hand was always bigger than Zoey. Bailey LOVES to eat... he is overweight and I don't free feed him anymore. I think he should weigh about 18 lbs maybe up to 22lbs. My other guy is about 16 lbs and Remy is now over 4 lbs. (she was projected to be about 3.5) she gained a pound in 3 weeks.. 25% of her body weight at 14 months of age. It is interesting to see the different history of the different dogs.

To answer your first post, yes she will probably grow a bit more and fill out. Rio was 2.7 lbs for the longest time up to about 9 months, and then when she was getting close to a year old she gained - got to about 3.1 lbs. She's 2 years old now and she's 3.4 lbs.

Wow! Thanks for all the good information! I like the teeth and spay together ideas. I'll definitely bring that up at our vet appointment this week. Also, the vet did separate the vaccines a week apart, because of her size. She didn't react to the initial vaccine, but she vomited a lot after the second and they gave her fluids and Benedryl and she was fine. Poor baby. I can't believe how much my husband and I LOVE her. She is THE MOST loving dog I have ever owned. We're now hooked on Yorkies and want to get another one in a few months! She has a groomer appointment next week and I'll post pictures then so she'll be all fluffy and prissy. thank you everyone! Your input is VERY helpful. Nothing like the voice of experience!!
