Spay I didn't know this but my neighbor has a yorkie who is 14 and has the equivilant of breast cancer. Her vet told her if she had spayed her chances of her not getting this was would be much greater. Has anyone else heard this? |
I believe that is the most current and popular view on spaying females early to prevent tumors........but 14 years is a pretty ripe ole' age |
Yes, that is correct. Spaying before the first heat reduces the chances of mamary cancer to <.5%. Spaying before the second heat raises those chances to about 8%. Anytime after that it goes up to about 26%. And not spaying leaves the dog open to pyometra, a life threatening uterine infection. |
