Newbie Hello, My name is Lynne, Tomorrow we are adopting a 2 year old male Yorkie. This will be a family pet, but mostly for my 12 year old girl who has been asking for a dog for a quite a while now. He weighs about 8 lbs. I have been reading about this breed, and have made the choice to keep his coat short, We live in a very hot climate (already in the 80's here) I know dental health is important, The family we are getting him from will be giving us some wet and dry foods. Should I just keep buying what they have been feeding him? His health record may be a little light, This is an army family, Husband is deployed overseas and the family are going to be with him. My plans is to take the dog to the vet ASAP, to get whatever is needed. Any suggestions, tips please! |
Welcome, I'm a newbie here too. I just got my little girl molly. After talking to a few people i had the same question about leaving her on the kibble she was on or changing and they said as long as its still a nutritious food and if i mix it she will be fine. So now I'm doing 2 parts old 1 part new and slowly reducing the old kind and bringing in the new. She seems fine with it. :) |
Since there was no paper work on Corky, I took him to the vet after I picked him up. He got all his shots, was tested for heart worm, got flea meds and all that stuff. Vet will like to clean his teeth, She showed me some build up, and said it needs to be removed. Said there was more in the back He is a busy dog. Looks like he will have to go to doggie school. Also surgery since I have no plans on breeding him. |
Welcome to YT! :) And congratulations on your new little boy. I'm happy to hear you took him to the vet for a check up right away. What kind of food has he been eating? You'll want to keep him on that for a while - at least until he settles in and gets comfortable in his new home. If you decide later to put him on a different food, transition him slowly. Changing foods too fast can upset their tummies. You sound like you're on the right track with the neutering and doggy school. We'd love to see some pictures of Corky whenever you have time to post them. Enjoy! Bonny |
Hi! Congratulations on Corky. We just discovered the "Yorkie world" in November. It's a great one, and I think you'll love it...especially YorkieTalk. :) |
Well today has been a day. Not allowing "habits" learned that will not happen here. I got a feeling he use to run his last home. He uses the potty, and his ques are very clear. He was a surprise for my daughter. I am teaching her to have a firm hand with him also, since she will be his "Mommy" Saturday I will be taking him for his grooming, and will have more pics but here is one I took today when I picked him up |
