Do you pet other dogs in Petsmart etc? I never pet anyone's dog unless its okay with them but I will talk to them. Saturday we were in Petsmart and I was looking at little Tshirts for Dudley. He is too big for small and too little for a medium. So, the woman standing next to me had a little yorkie. This little dog wanted to come to me so bad. She stared and stared and finally I told the woman that She knows another yorkie mom when she sees them. She was so sweet and loving. Even when she left this little dog looked back like, I want to go with you. Sooooo cute. Isn't it funny how they sense you are a dog lover?? |
Most dogs seem to get attached to me quickly. I talk to them like they are babies. :) At a public place, I only pet if the dog comes up to me (which I really don't think is really right to let a dog do because not everyone wants a dog sniffing their, ah, well...). But I don't go up and pet them, esp. without permission. And I can't stand when people do that with Ellie.. |
Oh how sweet, hope her mom wasn't jealous! I believe dogs are very intuitive, and do know how a person feels about them. I'm always amazed when Joey decides who he likes and who he doesn't like. He seemed to have favoritism towards men for a while, but I'm not really sure what it is, no rhyme or reason but he definitely likes some and dislikes others. Occasionally, he falls hard for someone who's visiting, and seems to love them more than me, but so far, that's never happened in the store. |
I only will pet them after I ask the owner if it's OK. But I will definitely talk goo-goo baby talk to them:D. |
I will pet after I ask the owner. My peeve is children who are too rough and the parents don't stop them. I do have to laugh at my dh... he used to say how he didn't like dogs...hmmmmm where ever we go you can find him playing or petting the dogs. I think he lied!!!! |
Her mom was holding her and so after she kept staring I just bent over and talked to her. I didn't ask her name but she told me she was 6yrs. old. I know what you mean about some people. I would not be happy with people just coming up and petting mine without asking. In fact, when we walked up there was a group of kids around them and one was holding her. I told my husband I would be scared to death to let kids hold mine. I know I'm an idiot and overprotective mom to the point of redictulous but that would really bother me. I can't believe she let them hold her. I would have been scared to death they might drop her. |

When I meet a dog in public, I look for approval from the person, and I hold my hand out for the dog to sniff. I reserve petting for my neighbors' dogs. |
I always ask first and I would expect people to ask me before they touch my dogs. One day I was in Petco and of course there are alot of people there with their dogs. Well there was one man there and he had a pit bull and of course nobody would go near him. I felt so bad because everybody was petting everybody elses dogs and nobody would pet this dog, So brave me goes over and asks if he bites and the man said he was a real mush. Well he was the sweetest dog I have ever met. Thats not to say I would ever pet a pit bull on the street but he was such a sweetheart. |
I always ask first, or atleast look for approval (you know how you pass the 'look' with people, LOL) or a dog comes up to me and the owner is allowing it, I'll pet them. I'm a dog lover in general so I always wanna pet a dog, lol |
I always ask first, just in case. I find it hard to resist a sweet dog. |

My binky was bigger at 10lbs but my social butterfly out of all the yorkies I've had..she wanted to make friends with everyone. My Savannah is only 3.6lbs and it scares me to death she's so tiny and its taking adjustment to get used to another smaller yorkie. Your not an idiot being over protective if they are dropped and break a leg its painful for them and us. My mom rescued one people couldn't afford his leg surgery.....kids dropped him My grandson is 2 he met my newest rescue last week and since he's used to me having binky...he just knew the rules right off and she sooo wanted to be his best bud. so they sat on the couch together watching kids tv stuff while he rubbed her belly. I thought my sally was small and she was 4lbs |
I ask them if it is alright if I pet there dog before I do. ALWAYS. Taught my children to do the same. |
Nope, I'll talk to an owner and ignore a dog that comes up...well I do often put my hand down and let them smell it if they are friendly wanting attention and the owner says they are friendly and its okay...not that I don't want to love on every dog, and not that its not hard when they run up tail wagging etc but I don't really let in the general public situations others pet mine so I just expect the same from myself...who knows what ickies ppl have...ye that and most the time I have mine with me so its more about letting the dogs say hi to each other... |
Depends on the day- sometimes I am in a rush and the goal is to get in and out as quick as possible- I am not one of those people that ooo's and aaah's over every dog, LOL. Honestly, I hate petting a lot of dogs in public because they usually leave my hand smelling awful! However, if I get to talking with someone and they have a cute dog, I might pet them. I don't care if people pet my dogs, as long as they ask first. I LOVE when kids ask to pet mine because I don't have any kids and don't know any kids so my dogs don't have any experience with them. |
What a cute story. Mine is very selective about people, too. It's always very interesting to me to see who mine likes and who she doesn't. It always tells me a little bit about the person, but I'm just not sure what.:D |
