Just joined this morning, just saying hello. Hi! My name's Vanessa and I'm new to this community, just joined this morning when I came across it trying to find answers to an issue Abby's having. My Yorkie's name is Abigal (Abby). She's 4.8lbs, 16 months old. I got her for Christmas in 09 because my husband's father is allergic to cats and my parent thought she'd be a great pet for me. They were right. I LOVE my little Abby. I really don't know what I'd do without her. She's so playful and affectionate. I have a 6 month old and she loves him like he's her own. I call her my little momma because she looks after him and is so patient with him. Since I've had my son, I noticed that Abby has become really protective over the family and barks SO much more than she use to (expeically at noises and stangers). She use to only do it when she was with her other half - Ollie (my parent's yorkie). |
Hello Vanessa and Abby, welcome to yt! I don't have any advise, but there is a wealth of information here on the YT Site. |
Due to circumstances, my 1 month old Grandson came to live with me for a few months last year. When I brought him home my Elsa was one protective little momma over him. No-one could get near him without her standing gaurd or getting in between him and them. Everytime he moved or cried in his crib she was right there checking in on him. I knew she was going to be a good momma. I would not change that behavior in her for a million dollars(hmmm!) No really, it only made me admire her even more. I NEVER tell Elsa to stop barking. It's not like she is over obsessed with it, but everytime she starts barking and growling I always go to where she is at and "investigate", I say what is it girl? Sometimes I will growl right along with her. I always tell her good girl. Someone told me a long time ago that if you teach your dog to "stop barking" then when the time may arise that they should bark, they will sit and be quiet, afraid of getting in trouble. Her and I are a pack!! LOL Little Tia will soon learn that too. Oh shoots......Welcome to YT!!! |
Hi Vanessa and Abby! Welcome! |
Hi there and welcome! You will love it here! |
Welcome to Yt. |
Hi Vanessa and Abby Welcome to YT. |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Hi Vanessa, Welcome again to you and Abby. I'm glad to see you here. I hope you will get some answers to your questions. I know Calleigh has started to bark more also. When she was little she didn't bark at all. She's 3 now and has started to bark more too. Maybe they are just being protective. |
Welcome Vanessa and Abby. Thank your little girl for "protecting" the family, but if it gets to be way too much barking then it's time to let her know she doesn't have to have that much responsibility. Usually if you don't let them know they don't need to keep barking, then it's a very big burden on them and they get very nervous. It's just too big a job for a tiny dog. |

:thumbup: I agree. Let her know that she was a good girl and that it is OK. Then get her attention on something else. Too big of a job would have to be King Kong to Elsa. Way too much boldness in that little body :D:D |
thanks everyone for the warm welcome! yes, definitley. we let her know when it's good and when it's not needed. i too, just like you with Elsa, admire her more for being so loving and protective over my little guy. it's amazing how much personality these little pups have. it amazes me everyday and has me in awe. :D |
