Confession... Advice on housebreaking? Okay, I have a confession. My dog has reverted back to going potty in the house, and I've been busting my tail to clean up behind her before the DH sees the evidence. Well, he was off a few days, and caught Khloe, so needless to say, it's about time to get her house trained. Has anyone had good luck without crate training? I don't have the heart to put her back in a crate. But she must be 90% housebroken soon, in like 2 months. The DH expressed his concerns that she is almost a year old, and this is uncalled for. |
I wish I could help you but I too am going through the same thing with Bella who is 8 months. I started a thread yesterday on this forum as well as the training forum and I didn't get any replies. Hope you have better luck than I did. Yesterday she even peed twice on my sofa. She was playing with my husband and he had stopped playing with her then I looked and she had peed. I think he had scolded her, so I am wondering if it is defiance or marking her territory. The same thing the second time only this time I scolded her. Lately when she doesn't get her own way, she does this kick thing, pushing out her back feet like a bull. Also she will attach her self to my husband's arm and hump it. I don't know what is going on with her, but I hope she gets over it soon. Good Luck with your little one. If I find something that works for me I will post. |
Snowbird - is Bella starting her first heat cycle? Sometimes that will make them act funny. Especially the humping thing. Our beagles will do this when one of the females starts her heat cycle. Might be the same reason for the potty thing too. Just something to think about. |
I crate trained both of mine and also use a doggie door. I know it is difficult at times using a crate but it worked for us and it sure is a lot better now that she is housetrained. |
1 Attachment(s) How do you want to train her? outside? potty pads? I'm not sure on the potty pad training maybe someone will chime in and help with that...but if outside training is what you want I can help...I have a 2 1/2 yr old and a 5 1/2 month old pup....my 2 yr old is fully house trained...my 5 mo old is coming along very nicely...he is already sleeping with DH and I with no accidents at all :D but he is still not fully house trained to have full run of the house...I don't trust him enough for that yet but he is getting there ;) First what you need to do it confine her, don't let her have full run of the house anymore...you are starting from the beginning again with potty training...You don't have to use a crate I hate crates...I only use them for travel...buy a x pen or play yard...I like the play yards I have 2 LOL...second I would get a good odor cleaner like Natures Miracle...you can get in pet smart, clean all the areas that she has pottied in with water and vinger let it dry and spray the natures miracle on it to remover the odor...you may not be able to smell it anymore after cleaning but she can and will use that spot again if you don't use the natures miracle. Like I said above you are going to have to start from the beginning with her and thats means keeping her confined when you can not watch her at all time...I would start off taking her out every 2 hours and after eating/drinking and any kind of play...when taking her out look at her and say gotta potty and go outside...keep saying go potty for pee until she does...when she does throw a potty party give her, her favorite treat and tell her what a good girl she is :D and if its time for her to poop as well tell her to hurry up....I do "go potty for pee" and "hurry up for poop"..I know she won't do both everytime but you should have an ideal of when its time for a poop...if she potties outside when you go back in let her stay out of the play yard for a bit with you having an eagles eye on her at all times...again don't let her have full run of the house...if you can't watch her put her in her confined area...if you catch her in the act correct her with a firm no, that should get her attention enough to make her stop peeing and take her right outside don't wait and say good girl, letting her know its ok to potty outside..you have to be very consistent with them...set her up for success don't give her a chance to fail...and success starts with you :) and please know its going to take longer than a few months to train her, it might take 6 mos or even a year to get her fully house trained so please keep that in mind and be patient...if you are consistent with the training she will get it ;) Here is the play yard that I have for my 5 month old pup..you have to order it online they are not in any stores that I know of I got mine off of Ebay xpens/play yards for pets/dogs....they are big enough for food/water/bed/toys. I would NOT put any potty pads down in her confined area at all that will just confuss her by saying its ok to potty in the house...she is a year old, she should be able to hold it atleast 5 to 6 hours now I love the plays cause they have a floor in them just in case they do have accidents and a mesh top that can be zipped up if you have a climber :D good luck...hope this helps :) |
Do you have a doggie door? We do, and I think that is why housebreaking has been pretty easy for us. My pup is 6 months old and I can't remember the last time he had an accident in the house. I know doggie doors aren't for everyone, but I think housebreaking is so much easier if you have one. |
I have Remy on a pretty tight schedule. I pretty much know when he was to poo and pee. I know he has to go as soon as he is finished eating and he eats at the same times each day. After he eats I take him out and he doesn't come back in till he is finished. First thing in the morning he goes, then the afternoon, after dinner, and right before bed time. I find keeping him on this schedule I don't have an surprises. I also keep a close eye on him and if need be I can confine him to one area of the house. Treats are also important!! I give Remy a cherrio when he goes out and potty. |
I have the same problem with Zach who is 10 months old. Zoe took almost a year to get housebroken. yorkies are sometimes very hard to housebreak. I wont use a crate for housebreaking. I think an x pen is much better. You really have to confine them and not give them the run of the house I put the pee pad right outside of the pen and when he goes on the pad he gets a treat and when he goes on the floor he gets a time out in his pen. It's starting to work now. Oliver our 11 week old shih tzu is 99 % housebroken. I found that puppies are like kids. They get busy and forget to use the potty especially when they're playing. Don't get discouraged. I thought I was going to flip out with Zoe but now she's perfect at 15 months old. |
I forgot to to tell you...if she doesn't potty when you take her out...put her in her confined area wait 15 to 30 minutes and try again until she does.:) don't just assume she doesn't have to go if she doesn't and let her have run of the house or even let her stay out with you watching her, cause as sure as I'm sitting her....the minute you go back in if you don't put her up in her confined area...she will go and potty somewhere in the house. |

I would love a doggie door. But our fence has too wide of gaps in between, and she has been known to pay the neighbors visits. It scares me to death. We have bad traffic out front and I know our two neighbors on each side of us, but that is about it. |

I would use a good pet odor remover shampoo and use the natures miracle after the carpet is dry on all her potty spots...I would take something to mark the spots so after you shampoo you still know where she pottied at ;) and you can spray the natures miracle on them and you might have to get those spots soaking with the natures miracle to get thru to the pads under the carpet as well....and no, the surgery should not revert her as long as you are consistent with her potty training. and now that I'm thinking about it when you go for the natures miracle in pet smart...I think they have a natures miracle shampoo as well....best odor remover EVER!! |

My little guy is over a year old now and he still has accidents from time to time. I don't think he'll ever be fully housetrained. I've just learned that I have to take him out every 2 hours, no matter what and if I do that, we don't have any potty accidents! I just set my phone to go off and remind me. Now, even taking him out every 2 hours, he still poops behind the dining room table and I just don't know how to fix that! I just have to constantly keep an eye out so I can hide it from my roommate! She'd kick him out if she knew! When I'm not home, I leave him in the bathroom with a puppy pad and he does a good job only going on the puppy pad. I doubt I'll ever trust him to have full run of the house when I'm gone unless I get hardwoods from wall to wall throughout! I know that's not really helpful, but just know that I share your pain!! |
I do not think Corky was fully potty trained when I got him. So I am starting from day one with him. When I leave the house (which is not much) I leave him in the garage. I am teaching my human daughter how to train him also He is a smart dog, So we should not have to much issue. My best advice is to always do everything the same every time. Show her where where she should potty, and lots of praise. |
I have what bellabay just uploaded a pic of too-a Best Pet soft sided play pen in medium... Princess has reverted to going in the house again! She has also been getting no-nos and bringing them to me so she's quite spiteful right now. She's all mad Dad changed his work schedule I'm pretty sure it's spiteful she keeps going by the front dog and previous she knew to ask to go outside-clean clean clean get the scent gone or they keep going there-and watch like a hawk...I'm breaking out the Best Pet play yard as soon as I get off here..given it is raining and has been but still my dogs will often eliminate on the patios and she loves the rain and mud so I'm really going with she's being spiteful over Dad's schedule change on her...she's very much so his dog now. Okay I'm off to get the play yard and go scrub, clean, clean,clean...it was lovely she looked at my Dad today and squatted and peed on the carpet in front of him-he freaked out  and she then went to the back door to go in the yard... Quote:

***going potty by the front door I meant to say...our entrance way isn't a place the dogs commonly go anyways...let alone go potty. |
I hate to tell my story but Sophie Kate was only what I would consider "potty trained" after 18 months. I tried everything and finally decided to gather as much information as I could and combine what I think were the best. 1. I keep her on a very rigid schedule, we go out about every three hours now (she is 3 years old). 2. Sophie Kate is crate trained and she is still crated when I am gone -she has to be for her own safety and to insure she does not potty in the house (she is a climber and had a bad fall about a year ago). 3. I treat trained, Cheerio's worked for me everytime she went outside I would give her a Cheerio, repeat the phrase "go potty" until she went. The turning point was her learning the command "go potty". 4. I started pad training last fall for when it is raining or snowing - it took about 2 weeks but she had to know the command "go potty" I still will put her on the pad from time to time she to re-inforce. 5. We go on long walks twice a day, those are the times she gets to really explore and can potty when she wants not on command. It really took me figuring her out before I could put what worked for me into a plan. I should add that Sophie Kate will NOT signal when she has to go out, that is frustrating but the schedule helps me a lot. Good luck and don't get discouraged. |
Well, I know my story will probably take the prize. I am almost embarrased to tell ya'll. The baby (Dudley) does great. Both schnauzers are housebroke and one is even senile. But, then there is Kayla. Kayla is going to be 4 in June. She always tee tee's outside or in the garage on papers if the weather is bad. But, when it comes to potty. She will come back in that doggie door 90mi. an hr. and potty in the hall. She thinks, I guess, thats her bathroom. Believe me when I say we have done everything. When she was little my husband got up at 2:00am to take her out. She just does not get it and I don't know what to do. I sit in the garage tonite for I don't know how long and she would not use the papers. Come right in and went in the hall. If I didn't love her so much I would snatch her bald headed. What can you do? We are at a lost as to what to do. HELP!!! |
My Scoobers was like that for about a year...he was scared to go on grass so he used a litter box in the bathroom well no he used to potty by his bed and not move...then he tried to finally go in the corner so litter boxing potty was a great accomplishment...we go him to go in the bathroom in his box only...then on pads...then I tried so hard for so long to get him to go outside...one day I was tired of it determined and at my wits end we walked for about 2 1/2 hours I knew he was barely able to hold himself by the time we went out the door he had just tried to go on his pad in the bathroom...he never went I gave up and we went home...he didn't make it to is pad he pooped right as we walked in the front door! I cried...he finally was just about wee trained completely (he was also a bad marker) and found he loved the yard..but he would come in and potty in the bathroom and go back out and play...finally I just gated off the area and confined him-he no longer wanted to potty where he "lived" and started going outside...now we have Princess Monster whom was completely trained at the same time Scoobers finally was...and tonight I spent an hour steam cleaning her rebellion in the entrance hall......apparently its not the training here that's an issue it's maintaining it! I'm so glad that I'm not alone. When I took time off from work to be there for my kids and new puppy, she was much better. But, just like some of you, I knew her schedule. Knew after she ate to wait 30 min. and take her out, knew to take her out every two hours during the day. She still won't let us know when she has to go. It's a rainy day here, so today will be awful. Already picked up a present; at least her 'Big Daddy' is working today and didn't catch her. (: Hope you all have a good day. |
