Help with T Storms/Rain in general Charlie does not like rain. I mean he really does not like it, he shakes if he senses it will rain he shakes when it comes and if it thunders you can give it up, his tongue becomes 10 feet long and he panics and breathes heavily. It is so pitiful  Now I have been told that all small breed have this issue and I have asked my vet about it they have suggested 1.5mg of melatonin about an hour before bad weather hits if I know its coming. Sometimes it works and sometimes not A couple times I did put him in his crate and covered it thinking it might calm him but it did not and I took him out. There is no consoling him at these times, you can hold and love on him and it makes no difference. It is raining now and we are expecting bad storms tonight, I did give him his melatonin with a half of a pepcid AC when he gets stressed his pancreatitis kicks in and thats a whole other issue. any help/suggestions is appreciated |
I wonder if one of those thunder shirts would work? I have been thinking about trying it for my yorkie too. He hates thunder storms. But mine actually likes to go in his crate, this is the only way to settle him. He curls right up and calms down. I too have tried melatonin and its didnt seem to help mine. But i dont think its a small dog issue. Because only one of my three small dogs gets like this. The other two could care less. I have heard really good things about the thundershirts. |

Don't know if this will help you but I will put it out there anyway. I have a black lab who was deathly afraid of storms and would pant and freak out horribly. I got one of those cd's with nature sounds that had thunder storms on it and would play it when there was no storm around. He got used to it after awhile and learned to just think of it as another noise that was no big deal. Maybe that will help? I know the iPhone has those apps that have thunderstorm sounds, and alarm clocks also have them. Good luck!! |

You can confirm this with your vet of course, but 3mg (rather than 1.5) of Melatonin is often used for storms/4th of July/anxiety. Also, since you want it for short term relief - make sure it's *not* the time-release kind of Melatonin. |
Morgan used to be the same way with thunderstorm or even heavy rain storms. She's sense it was coming hours if not the day before. I bought a Thunder Shirt for her and it has helped immensely. google it and buy one. can't hurt to try plus its a non medicated solution. |
Callie is not very scared of thunderstorms just some scared so I sing to her and wrap her in a towel tight and hold her. I have heard many great things about the thundershirt and I found a link for you Thundershirt | The Best Dog Anxiety Treatment |

We have to do this with Onni when we do target shooting. She shakes so hard it scares me and the only thing that calms her down is to turn the TV on and drown out the sound. |

So, could you tell how thsi Thunder Shirt works?? What does it do exactaly? Would like to get and idea if I should order one. |
Its not always a bad thing. My Jewels and chachi were very nervous about a storm last night and they finally jumped off the bed and 2 minutes later the sirens were going off letting us know their was a tornado warning. They were showing the line of the trnado aqnd it was headed right towards us so it was important that we take cover. Our cats were acting off too so I think they knew something was up to. |
For those that asked about the thundershirt and what it does, you should click on the link that Lovetodream88 put in her post. It explains it on the website. |
