Pet steps or ramps? I am a new Yorkie owner. We have had Roxi for 5 weeks now...she is 15 weeks old and weighs 1.7 lbs. She loves sleeping with my daughter on her bed and loves looking out the front window at my cats. At the moment she jumps on a hat box and then onto my daughter's bedside table but then gets stuck there because she can't make the jump onto the bed. I've moved the hat box to the living room window so she can look out, but she still has to stand on hind legs to see. So I need some advice on what to purchase...steps or ramp? My daughter's room is in a Paris France theme (black & white) so I would like to find something to match her room. Any ideas? :aimeeyork |
Hi and Welcome to YT! Mine jump over the steps and slide down the ramps.... I need a better quality set... just a warning... Yorkie puppies have a tendency to watch you instead of where they're going much of the time so be very careful as she's learning to use them....:D |
Mine use steps. There are some out there in the stores but I made my own, wasn't hard at all. Anyone with a little bit of knowlege and the right tools can make a nice set and fancy them up the way you want to match your daughters room. |
I have stairs for mine, but the problem is they go up the stairs and jump off the couch or bed. I have yet to find steps that will match my decor though. I only found the ugly brown plastic ones in the pet stores. Maybe you can have one custom made to match the black/white color scheme, or paint the store bought one (in pet-safe paint of course). |
I have steps, and had to train them by putting a treat on each step to get them to use them...Buzz and Apple were doing perfectly, going up and down the steps, then I got Cha Cha, the Chorkie, and she would jump off the bed, so A & B started doing that (Cha Cha goes up the steps too)...Now I have about a 5 or 6" airbed, on that side of the bed they jump off, as their landing pad...It's always something w/these Yorkies lol... |
i guess this would depend on the height between the steps since your pup is still a baby & small. you can also get a rap that has grip so the puppy doesn't slide :P i am looking into getting my mickey steps personally because he's 15 yr old and 9lbs so he would have no problem using the steps |
Hi! Welcome to YT.:) I recommend steps, because they are more stable for the ascent and descent. I got mine here and I am fairly sure they will design them to fit your decor. Just ask them, if you're interested.:) Dog Steps |
I finally got some steps. They are gray plastic (cheap) with gray non-skid pads on the steps. Despite it being cheap $19.99 less 20% off at Bed, Bath, & Beyond...they actually don't look that bad. I would use gray with a black and white theme. Anyway, start with some cheap ones, see if you can get the puppy to use them, if so then you can always elaborate with fancy and more sturdy steps if you wanted (these are not sturdy enough for children to be jumping & playing on). I think he would use them starting this young. Our little ones do (and they aren't as little as yours). I wish I had gotten steps long before this...certainly would have saved the $400 ER trip when one of ours fell off the couch! (she's ok, and the benefit we got a full work-up, complete x-rays of all her joints...which she passed with flying colors -- at least I keep telling myself that was the benefit!!) |
I use a ramp by my bed and trained them all to use them to get up and down. I ended up putting a bed rail on the side because they were jumping half way down on the ramp defeating the purpose. Mu husband made stairs years ago for another yorkie i had and used the same carpet we have in the house. I use them by the window so they can look out. I use the Scamp ramps and you can buy covers for them. |
Roxi, Don't be afraid to be creative... I have some "formal" Stairs, but as you have seen they are pretty expensive. But in other instances, I use a Cardboard Box to a Chair, to a End Table to the Window Seal, to get my Male Yorkie where he can see out the Window. ;) Sometimes, just re-arranging the Furniture can get the job done. I've found that they don't mind a more "complex" route, as long as they can get where they want. Have a good Day ! :) S.W. |
Thanks everyone for your suggestions. When we first got Roxi, my intention was to never allow her on beds or furniture...that way we wouldn't need to worry about her jumping or falling off. So far she seems scared to even try to jump off--just barks and whines until someone puts her down. But when she started finding her own way up, I decided I needed to get her something. I think she will probably be OK with the stairs (as long as they are the ones for small pets). I think I might improvise first using items that I already have in the house to see if she will use a ramp or stairs before I invest in purchasing either. Someone told me that the money you save in food by having a Yorkie is spent on all the other items needed...portable playpen, stroller, carrier, xpen, potty pads, etc. But my daughter and I love her dearly and are so happy with our decision to get a Yorkie. I even took her to work with me last week (thus the need for the portable playpen) and now my coworkers have decided that Friday's are Yorkie Day:aimeeyork (2 of my other coworkers own Yorkies also). I highly suggest a ramp. Hubby made one quite easily and used carpet remnants to keep Gypsy from sliding. One of the reasons I say ramp is because I know I have a mobility problem and a ramp is so much easier to negotiate than steps. It is better on the hips and legs. |
Thanks J. I'm thinking of trying the ramp first...easier to build and seems easier for Roxi than stairs. Until Sunday I hadn't even heard about ramps. |
I have steps for the couch but i could not find steps the right height for my bed. I ended taking plastic storage bins of different heights to make sort of a hybrid between stairs and a ramp. I covered it with a rubber backed bathroom rug so Buster won't slip. I also have a similar set up near my front door so Buster can watch the world go by. I keep his extra stuff in the boxes so it solves the added problem of what do I do with all his stuff. |
