Hi there, My name is Bri and I am receiving a Yorkie for my 16th Birthday. I have been wanting one of these beautiful dogs since I was 9! We are currently looking into different breeders trying to find that special one. I am new to the breed so I have been researching like crazy to know all I need to know. I did not realize how much thought went into trying to find a pure-bred. I am looking to get a female pup, and will hopefully have her in March! :D

Welcome to YT. So glad you researching before buying. There is so much useful info on here from some very knowledgeable/experienced people. Good luck in your puppy hunt. Be sure to post pictures, we so love that.

My advice is to look at the YTCA breeder referral page. Just remember to screen very carefully. Even YTCA members lose their way. :( Anyway, take your time and don't rush into buying a pup. You buy your breeder first, and the pup second. I say this because all puppies are cute and can pull on your heart strings. If you fall in love with a pup, it makes it harder to screen a breeder. You want to find a breeder that will stand by their pup, if it gets sick after a year, after 2 years, or 10. A good breeder will stand behind their dogs as long as you own them, (15+ years). It might cost a bit, but you'll benefit in the long run.

So glad you are doing your research. You sound like a very responsible young woman. Good luck in finding the perfect puppy. You will be so in love with her. There is nothing like a Yorkie. Keep us posted as to how your search is going. :)

Thank you for your info! Well We have been looking and we found one breeder nearby that had a great bloodline, But the breeder stated that if I purchase a pup from her I am required to sign a contract stating I will have my puppy fixed and will not breed her. Needless to say I decided She was not the breeder for me. Now I have Found A promising breeder who has two females that will be ready the day after my birthday! They are $800 each and Continental Kennel Club. I absolutely fell in love with the smaller female. But there are a few things I'm not sure about, I think in her contract or whatever it was, she stated that she only has a 48 hour guarantee. In the resources page on her site this was one of the statements: "I, the seller, am not responsible for veterinary fees or any other expenses incurred once the puppy leaves my home."

I would not recommend you buy your puppy from a breeder whose puppies are Continental KC registered (not really a good registry) or who only who only has a 48 hour guarantee. Most ethical breeders will offer a 1 year health and genetic guarantee. I'm not sure why you were offended by the first breeder. You just want a pet correct? An ethical breeder wants what is best for her puppy. A spay contract and/or limited AKC registration is a very common thing with good breeders. I would go with the first breeder myself. You may need to research good breeders a bit more before deciding on where to get your Yorkie. ;)

I think the first breeder you mentioned sounds much better than the second. Good breeders require that all pets are spayed/neutered. Breeders with 48 guarantees and not AKC registered sound pretty terrible to me. This is just from what I've researched about breeders, I'm not an expert or anything!

At 16 years old, you are looking for a pet, right? The reason the breeder is requiring you to have her spayed is because this breeder has probably spent years ensuring her "line" is healthy, and is likely willing to stand behind the puppies, hopefully for life. If she lets even one puppy go on an open registration, allowing a breeding that can be registered, it will ruin all her hard work. You really want to focus on getting an AKC registered puppy to ensure the purity of the breed and health of the dog. Trust me and everyone else who is going to respond to your questions and objections to the first breeder. AKC is the ONLY reputable registration available for pure bred dogs. And, the health guarantee is going to be a priority if you want to ensure your puppy will have a long, healthy, happy life. Please do more research, even on Yorkie Talk (Sick & Injured / Emergencies Talk - YorkieTalk.com Forums - Yorkshire Terrier Community), so that your are well informed about your decision.

When you do finally bring your new puppy home make sure you post photos!

awwe happy early 16th birthday! is your birthday in march? (since you wanted the dog around march) my birthday's in march too!

anyways, I am not going to lie, finding the right breeder and the right puppy take time. so please don't try to rush it!

Thank you, I have been told by majority that CKC is definitely not the way to go. And I guess I understand the reason behind a spay/neuter contract. So Today right after we got back from church, a Lady called about her Yorkies. Turns out she lives about 10 minutes from my house and her Yorkshire just gave birth a week ago. She had two pups but sadly only one survived. It just so turned out it is a female! :) She is AKC registered and I made a trip to take a look at the baby, and I got to see the parents. The mother is a beautiful rare reddish, and the father is just silver and so handsome! I can really tell this woman truly loves her Yorkies and they apart of her family. Well, we put a deposit on the little pup and I'll have her in 6 weeks!!! :D

Welcome! How exciting. it is great you are doing your research and ask lots of questions. I would stick with AKC and want a one year contract. I bought Cali from a non AKC breeder with a 48 hour guarantee and ended up spending well over 5,000.00 in vet bills the first 8 months. It is better to find a great breeder, pay a little more, if need be and save the heartache and financial hardship of buying from the wrong person. Good luck and I can't wait to see the baby you end up with.

regarding the breeders youve found, the first one sounds better than the other. the 48 hour sounds sketchy unless if she mean tto say you have 48 hours to take the puppy to the vet for a check up but still. also you really do want to spay your puppy for health & your sanity reason. My aunt's family have female dogs and when they're in heat its a nighmare for my aunt because the dogs are always ripping their pads off and bleeding all over the house & fabric. plus if you don't spay your dog is more likely to develop different diseases (can't remember the name off my head)

and also remember for a female puppy from a good breeder with a good lineage, be willing to pay a lot of money. I am paying 2000$ for my new girl puppy.

Ok so Today A lady called us right after church, and she has a week old female Yorkie. The mother gave birth to two pups but sadly only one lived. The survivor turned out to be a female. This Breeder Lives only 10 minutes away from us, so we made a trip to see her. The mother is a rare reddish color, while the father is very silver! They were just beautiful! You can really see that this woman loves her Dogs and treats them like family. They are All AKC registered pure-breds! We put down a deposit and in 6 weeks she's mine!! :) Thank you all for your help. (Oh and thank you 'Jennzy' My Birthday is March.4th!) I can wait a few more weeks for a lifetime Yorkie! :D

This isn't necessarily true. I am currently talking with one of the best, most successful exhibitor breeders in TX and she lets her puppies go to pet homes for $1000. I also talked to another breeder who wanted $2000 - again, it is about homework! When you find a good breeder it is not about making money, but recouping expenses.
