Normal puppy personality? Hello everyone, I know I took a break from posting, life got in the way! I have a question about yorkie puppies. What would you consider a "normal" puppy personality for a yorkie? I got a yorkie from a breeder and to make a long story short, she's now with my grandmother, and I visit every week. She's around 5ish months now (don't have the paper infront of me), but I'm worried about her personality. She was taken away at 9 weeks, which isn't ideal.. so I'm not sure if that is the reason. Her personality: she's VERY laid back, and super calm, and if you can get her to play it's for a short period and she will sleep all day. She literally gets up, eats, goes to the bathroom, maybe picks up a toy and just carries it, then sleeps some more. She's also a "loner", and will wander off by herself and not worry about anyone else. Where as the other puppies I've had, they are always worried about where you are. She's just too calm and confident, I guess I've never seen a puppy like this before. She has been to the vet (who used to breed yorkies), and got a clean bill of health, as well as all of her vaccines and testing. Everything was great, and the vet said she was a very confident girl. Her diet is the best of the best, and she is so spoiled with "enrichment" toys. And both my grandmother and I live for her, so were just trying to figure things out. I'm probably overreacting :( at first when we got her at 9 weeks, she didn't cry ONCE, she never had separation anxiety, we were all expecting it. So we kept saying "maybe in another week or so her personality will come out".. maybe this is her personality? but right now she's a blob... ughhhh I DON'T KNOW |
I know many people who would trade with you in a heart beat! Calm and confident is a good thing. It means you've done a good job making her feel secure. |

Out of all my Yorkies that I have had, only 3 three of them I had as a puppy. They were so laid back, learned very fast. I wouldn't say they were loners, they just didn't have that Hyper Puppy behavior. They were very confident in who they were. Yes, they liked to follow me around, but if I wasn't in their sight, it wasn't a problem. |
Hehe I must say, I'm a bit jealous!! Wish mine was more calm, although I wouldn't trade him for anything in the world! :p |
Sometimes they look to us to provide stimulation for her. Get some rope toys and balls and play tug of war and fetch with her. Teach her tricks with treats. Take her out on walks every day |
I know about a poodle like that but that dog played with toys. She just could care less about people. She was far more into inanimate objects or outdoors than she was people. She was very smart and quick to learn. She came when called but was very soon moving away from the person and about her own business. She seemed to be lacking a social gene or something as she avoided interactive involvement as much as possible. She never sought out cuddles or instituted socialization. Otherwise, a healthy, bright, beautiful dog. Never have known another dog like that. |
Oh, forgot to add that the poodle was like that from puppyhood apparently. |
Have you tried to get her involved in some type of obedience training to see if she wants that kind of mental stimulation - something that makes her have to recognize authority, think and use her memory, etc.? Some "experts" on TV and in books I've read say some dogs are not fulfilled unless they are involved in a structured lifestyle with a "leader" and an agenda that makes them think. |
I dont know your grandmothers age but I think puppies react to their surroundings... My puppy was super active but then again so was my house hold, I had a 15 year old daughter who always had friends over, they played with my dog for hours.. their was music playing kids laughing going in and out , so she got hyper from her surroundings.. Im going to assume that your grandmother is pretty laid back, and has a quite household. |
My dtr and I both have Yorkies. We had planned to get them out of the same litter. The breeder had only one left so I let them get him. I actually got Gypsy a week earlier than they got Gremlin. My Gypsy is very laid back and rarely played with toys as a puppy. Gremlin on the other hand is very hyper. Would rather be playing ball than anything else. I am very happy with Gypsy's personality and attitude. Gremlin is more active like my dtr. |
My Daizy was just like that!!! Compared to my sisters yorkie I kinda worried that she didn't really have a personality....but she did eventually grow into her own adorable little personality!!! She is as sweet as can be. Confident but also submissive..quiet...loving..but likes her own space...sometimes she decides she is needy for awhile...so I always enjoy those moments. She didn't care for toys...didn't play much...mostly wanted to eat, sleep, pee/poo...she did that for months and months... Now she's still calm and quiet....but she has her very cute moments...and I wouldn't trade her calm persona for nothing!!! Then we got another yorkie...Tulip was/is completely the opposite...how I missed the baby days with my Daizy!:D Of course we adore our Tulip...but she's a firecracker! Heck an ATOM BOMB compared to Daizy!! Don't worry...you got LUCKY!!!:DEnjoy her! |
Laughing at your description of Tulip! Sounds familiar. |
Mollie Jade is 7 years old and always been very laid back . |
My Male Sneakers (2yo now) when he was a Puppy, was very clingy, still has some separation anxiety, but wanted to play and be with us all the time. But, after our new puppy Female Becca arrived, he changed a LOT. Seemed like it just matured him overnight, and he's very protective of Becca, specially when we're out, he just goes nuts if anyone other that "Family" approaches us or her. Becca, on the other hand, is "vivacious" ! Play and wags constantly, but, when left alone, is just fine with that, playing with her toys, sleeping, and just happy as a lark. She, at this time doesn't have any separation or possessive posture established for the "Pack". But, I'm sure as time passes, that may change. She's a very individual dog. These two, Brother/Sister, two (or so) Liters apart, almost 2 yrs age difference. |
